The factory came to have a play

Australia's best known tarmac rally is currently underway - the Targa Tasmania.

The Porsche Museum has sent a few cars to play. Klaus Bishoff is running in this 908/2

Walter Rohrl is here as well running a 911SC - well not just any one but the one he drove in the 1981 world Rally Championship

The factory also sent an RS60 Spyder as well.

I just love it that they don't just sit in a museum gathering dust.

Feast your eyes! Firstly one of the man with my son...

and some more...

Walter is a very cool guy ; says he will not win Targa with this 30 year old car ; even though the factory have totally rebuilt it. It sounds very cammy and all of the quoted 280bhp! He's only driven in a couple of times since the rebuild.

From today
Quote:
While Jon Siddins was the man to catch today in the Temco Prologue, it is expected the 1980 and 1982 World Rally Champion, Walter Rohrl, will battle it out with four-time Classic Outright winner, Rex Broadbent.

“I’m feeling the pressure,” Broadbent said. “There’s a lot of pressure to do well, and there’s at least five or six people who could beat us.

“Today is about getting the cob webs out. It was the first time I’ve hit the rev limiter in a car for six to eight months, but it was good, and the car was great.”

Rohrl, on the other hand, was more intent on getting used to a car he hasn’t driven in anger since 1981.

“It was a nice experience,” he admitted.

“It’s the first time I’ve been back on a special stage in this car and it just seems like 30 years ago. I feel like I’ve jumped back in time 30 years, like a young guy.

“The car is the same, it’s soft, it’s rolling quite a lot and not so much power, but I think that’s what it was like 30 years ago.

“For me the biggest thing I don’t know is tyres, because I have no experience of racing where I have to save my tyres. It will be a challenge for me to see how fast I can go and save my tyres.”

He did the flying mile a few times. But the bodywork is very fragile - cracked fibreglass etc. Too valuable to risk these ground hugging cars on Tassie's roads ; they are quite brutal ; you dont get possums & wallabies on the road at the "ring either!

After day 1...
Quote:
The Porsche 911s of Victorians Peter Eames and Nic Ellis, and two-time World Rally Champion, Walter Rohrl, are equal fourth.

Rohrl is still one of the favourites to win the category, but his Porsche team were quick to point out that the German used the first day to settle into the event, with plenty of speed in reserve.

Years ago Walter Rohrl raced a 356 with a Carrera 4 cam engine in Tasmania. (I think it was Walter)

Surprising that car was withdrawn because of gearbox issues. I though the engine would have gone bang before the gearbox.

Walter told me that in the wet twisty stuff he was quicker than the 997s! I don't think he was joking.

More news : the Bischoff/Fuchs 908#266 has been withdrawn (surprised they were risking that one) and they are subbing another car tomorrow...I think it is the silver 4 cam...

That 911 SC/RS sounds absolutely unbelievable in the flying mile - almost like a 917 in teh movie Le Mans!

Walter is the man.

Very cool!
That is an amazing SC.
I wonder why they put a duck tail on an 81. Given the age and I think the last factory duck was on a 75.

It is a Type 954 SC/RS

Do some searching for more info. It is out there. It is basically a 3.0 RS built in the 80s. It had MFI and such, meant for rallies while the factory was still allowed to use the MFI and cool RS bits based on the prior homologation of RS/RSR.

Hang on, hang on... Wasn't this car driven by Walter in 1981? The 911SC/RS cars were built in the latter part of 1983 and homolgated in January of 1984. I'm thinking this is not an SC/RS. And, while Walter did drive an SC/RS later, it was sponsored by Almeras. I don't see any of that on this car...

Yeah, I've never seen the bolt on 934 type flares on an SCRS. I'd be interested in hearing what the history of the build on this car is. JR is right about it being too early for an SCRS...... similar, but different I think.

One of the videos does show what looks to be this car in Almeras livery.

Yes , he only did the one race in this car in 1981. Sometime later the car became a test mule for the Paris-Dakar Rally cars and when rediscovered in the Porsche graveyard outside Stuttgart a year or so ago was in Walter's words "a wreck".

I have noted down some questions above and will attempt to get some more pics after targa. there are a couple of private functions I am attending with some of the cars as centerpieces.

The jack plate is one reinforced mother!

One other detail ; in the official Porsche video above , the tacho has a stuck on marker at around 5k. That's because the tacho ain't working properly , and Walter says that is his redline

A not so great interior shot ; the steering wheel is stock standard and not as raced in San Remo! Not sure if they have swapped another one in for targa. Other than the seats and roll cage the interior looked pretty straight. Rear seats were installed and door cards present though covered in felt.
