Seperating axle from G/B??
I am the process of removing the 901 gearbox and the axles from my '69 911 as part of an ongoing refurbishment project. The Allen bolts came out easy enough, but the axle will not separate from the trannie. The manual I have says to "tap it with a soft faced hammer." I tried a rubber mallet and a metal hammer, but am worried about damaging the axle. Should I just wail on it? Any tips?

zmayne,
Take a thin, one side chisel (like a wood chisel) and go in through the gasket. Use a ‘soft’ hammer. Have the flat side of the chisel toward the transmission axle flange. The CV joint will separate flat with the transmission axle flange surface. Do this on both sides of the joint. Do not try to chisel in at the roll pins. If you scratch the flange or the CV joint surfaces, dress them with a flat-file. Best, Grady

Thanks for the confirmation Grady, that was next on my list of methods to try.

I hope you are documenting your project for one of your media outlets.
