timing light?
my question is about setting my timing. my car is a 1970 911t 2.2 with webers. i have the timing light set up, car is idiling at 900 rpm, look at the timing marks and i see two of them. the stationary mark(on the fan housing) seperates the two moving marks if that makes sense. i rotate the distributor one way and the mark on one side gets closer, turn the ditributor the other direction and the other mark moves closer. where should they line up if my timing is set right? should the stationary mark divide the two or should it be more to one side or the other if that makes sense. my car seems to run better if the tdc mark seperates the two evenly, if this is messed up any advive would help. thanks in advance.

Sounds like someone has changed the orginal pulley to a later style pulley. On the 1970 model 911s there are six notches in the front pulley. They are in order- tdc, 30 degrees, 35 degrees, 120 degrees, 240 degrees and fe (ferden-enden) mechanical fuel injection pump timing. You should set the timing @tdc at idle, then rev up the motor and see if the advance in your distributor is working. If your dist. advance is working you will rev it up to either the first mark if it is a T, and to the second mark if it is an E or S. If you have no advance in your it is because your lazy/stupid Porsche Tech did not put one drop of oil under the dist. rotor. Ever wonder why there is a little piece of felt under your dist. rotor, it is there to keep oil in the dist shaft and keep the advance mechanism lubed, so it will advance, instead of rusting in place and not functioning. The later style pulley has a -5 degree notch left of the tdc notch for timing on later models. I hope this post helps add to the life of our prized PORSCHES. Remember, PORSCHE is the best, F___ the rest!!!!!!! OTTO
