CV joint question 85 targa

im re-conditioning my rear CV joints. i completely dis-assembled them hot tanked them then re-assembled them found 2 off them had excessive play the other 2 wear still tight. back to the 2 CV's that had excessive play one them appeared to be over heated as evident the 6 ball bearings turned a blueish color. the 915/68 that turns them is a open diff type. also what is the best type of grease to use on 911 CV's and why dont the use clamps on the inboard side of the axles? could anyone give advice on this?

The reason they don't use a clamp on the small inside part of the CV boot is to allow some additional flex..it is a very good idea. Keeps the boots alive much longer.

I like the VALVOLINE DURABLEND GREASE....works great for me..from the manufacturer.

"DuraBlend Grease is a semi-synthetic lithium complex EP heavy-duty automotive grease with exceptional resistance to high temperatures and heavy loads. It is recommended for a wide range of industrial, automotive, mining and fleet applications including wheel bearings of disc-brake equipped vehicles and constant velocity joints"

Available at most FLAPS in town too.

Here is a thread worth studying:

Reconstructing Constant Velocity (CV) Joints

While long, it has a lot of useful information that you need.

Best,

1. Grease: Redline CV1

2. Play: CV of Ocala will polish your ways and install balls which are .001-.003" larger. They do not grind the heat treat off the races, merely give them a polish. They rehabbed the rear halfshafts from my C4 for $150/side and are very personable- call them to see what it would cost to do just your loose ones.

What i dont understand is why dont they leak? if you did that (no clamp) on any other car you would have a problem.

"What i dont understand is why dont they leak? if you did that (no clamp) on any other car you would have a problem."

VW...humm.could start another thread?..some models did not use the small clamp. Specifically, I have a 1991 VW Vanagon Weekender and no small CV boot clamps on it either.

CV grease is really inside the CV joint and bearings..the boot will have some, but not much inside. Centrifugal force keeps the grease away from the small end of the boot. It is a pretty tight fit too.

The purpose of the boot it to protect the CV joint from water and contamination..not work as a reservoir for additional grease.
