915 shifter
How can you tell if your 915 shifter has a factory installed short shift kit in it?
Thanks, Tom B. |

If you have an option code sticker on the underside of your front trunk lid you can check that. If your car is an '85, your shifter will be 10% shorter than all years from '73-84 (1972s used a different shift tower). If your car is an '86 it could have the same set-up that '85 models were fitted with, but it could have the optional 20% shorter unit (10% shorter than stock '85/86 models, 20% shorter than all other 915s) referred to by most as the super-short shifter. So, if your car is an '86 there is a chance that a factory SSS was installed (check your option codes for #243), and it's the only year that a "super short shifter" was offered.

One easy way is to see if the top of the shift lever has a collar welded to provide a stop for a leather shift boot.
The definitive method is to observe the shape of the "shift fork", the rectangular metal box that contains the shift lever. The factory short shifter uses a fork with a curved top edge (see photo) and the pivot pin hole is above the vertical center line of the fork . The standard shifter has a flat top surface as does the '86 semi short shifter. However the pivot pin hole in the '86 unit is slightly above center as shown.
