Replace 911s cam with 964 cam
Hello
I have a Porsche 911s of 1974. I have read that you can benefit from taking camshaft with 964 profile. But searched for documentation on how to doe, what it takes around timming and must i reinforced valve spring, but can not find anything. Does anyone here have experience with this conversion? |

Go to the Engine Rebuild forum.
Can not confirm if you can drop 964 cams into the 74. As far as springs, I recently swapped and used original springs. Now CAM Timing, that is always fun thing to do. Break a Leg!

Requires removal of the power steering lobe. Best to regrind an early cam to 964 specs.

Aren't the cam towers different, 3 journal versus 4 journal from the 74 S versus the 964?

Yes, what the OP wants would be a custom grind.

Does your car still have the original 2.7L CIS engine in it? A cam switch can certainly be an improvement, but there are other things that need to be done to make it worthwhile.
If your '74 still has it's original CIS injection you will not be happy with the change - the original cams were designed to work with that induction system. To make it all worthwhile you'll also need to change the injection to carburetors or one of the aftermarket electronic systems and also change pistons. Even after those changes your heads will only be able to flow as much as their ports and valves allow. There isn't much more horsepower available to the 2.7 unless you start spending a great deal of money, and then it makes more sense to change to a later model larger engine such as a 3.2.
