95 993 engine with moderate miles but crappy leakdown

Hey guys,

I am looking at a 993 motor for a conversion. It is a low mile engine, but it has crappy leakdown results (3 cylinders at less than 10, two at 20 and one at 70). He says it is probably going to need a valve job.

What else could this be?

Any ideas on the costs of this kind of work?

That one sure sounds like it DOES need work.

The leakdown test should have told you WHERE the leakage is coming from as frankly, thats the whole purpose for the test in the first place.

If that wasn't noted, it should be performed again since you do not know if the engine has bad rings/cylinders or simply leaking valves.

Onec you have that info, one can offer some potential costs.

During the leak down test the mechanic can hear if air is coming from the rings, intake, or exhaust valves. Check with the shop to see what the results are. Woops, sorry Steve same answer.

I gather the 70 cylinder was exhaust.

If it is the valves, how much would that run? WAG acceptable.

Are you going to take the motor out yourself and deliver it to someone to do the work? or do it all yourself, or?

I would have someone else do it. The person is looking to discount it about $3500 for the work. But I think the work will be $5500 minimum.

$3500 is accurate if youre not doing the other side or anything else "while youre in there"..

assuming the engine is already out of the car..

Do a compression check, then throw some oil in the low cylinders. If the compression comes up, it's rings.

Make sure the valves are not being depressed by the rockers. If a poor valve clearance job was done, where the clearance is less than specified, then even though the cam is in the correct phase, it still might be pushing the valve open. Worth a check on those 3 cylinders.

993's dont have adjustable valves, they have hydraulic cam followers-lifters.
