Engine instal difficulty

Ok

Engine is back together, up on jack, under car, and bolts aligned. I am within 1 1/2 of the transmission being fully seated, and I can get no further. My question is, what could be interfering? The clutch fork ( had it pointing straight toward the engine, correct?) is it possible the splines in the trany are just not lining up? I am hesitant to force it further, as I tend to break things that way. Wondering if anybody has any tips. Bentley crapped out on this one.

I have no experience with 911 engine installs, as I've only owned one for a few months, but LOTS of experience with front engine installs. I'd say your trans splines are not mating with the clutch or pilot bearing. Did you align them up with a lineup tool before the install?

Engine and trans go into the car as a unit, not seperate. It's probably possible, but dang hard to do seperately. Drop the engine, pull the trans, mate them up (which is much easier on the ground) then reinstall. And a big +1 to the alignment tool for the clutch.

The clutch release fork must engage the groove in the throw out bearing as the two come together.
This is hard to do with the trans. in place. Much easier to mate them on the ground then install as a unit.
If you didn't remove the clutch while the motor was out it should be lined up OK.
Not sure what year this car is (helpful to list it in your signature) but there should be a hole in the top driver side of the trans. which you can look in with a mirror and make sure the release fork is engaging the TOB as you slide them together.

I have done it and it can be a pain in the ass. Look in the sight hole and check to see if the fork is stuck in the wrong position.
At the front of the engine turn the crank just a hair as maybe the splines are not lined up.
If you can, grab hold of the front/sides of the engine and wiggle like hell and it should slide right in with a tad bit of effort.
Do not bolt engine up until you verify that the clutch fork is mated to the TO bearing via the sight hole.
Once was enough for me, drop tranny and eng together-much easier.

Always pull them as a unit, much easier.

I installed the transmission and engine together. If you are really stumped, consider pulling your transmission and hooking them up as a unit and then doing the install. It's really easy when they are together.

I had a hard enough time getting the transmission and engine lined up when they were both out. I honestly can't imagine doing the engine by itself, but I've heard it can be done. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

is it a 3.2 with G50? they go together very easily when all is lined up. You have to install the fork as it goes together - I've done it with a rope holding the tranny up in the garage, easy peezy.

year of car please. you waste a lot of replies without it. fork straight back could be the problem if it's 72-86. it will hit the pressure plate. it needs to be angled inward so it just clears the throwout bearing as you wiggle the engine onto the trans. then you stop as it clears and check with a mirror and flashlight, leaning over the engine and looking through the hole on top of the bellhousing. get it into the t/o bearing properly before you complete moving the engine toward the trans. FWIW, i would not pull the trans to do the install. done it zillions of times and it's a no brainer. just match the angle of the engine to the angle of the bellhousing.

Many thanks to all replies.

Sorry about the limited info. In my last thread, I gave my full intro. Will work on the sig. line. The car is an 83/3.0 cab

Right after posting, I rotated the fork forward and everything went together fine. Now I have bigger issues. No oil pressure! I think I forgot to remove the cotton tshirt I stuffed into the oil lines to stop dripping while the motor was out. I am spending the rest of the night getting drunk in the hopes that the issue is more clear in the morning.

Here is a link to the air duct you need (from your first thread). Don't know if you found it yet.

The fingers of the TOB can be behind the TOB keeping you from getting close. You need to look through the port to the left side of the trans with a flash light and a mirror to be sure youre picking up the TOB properly. You have an inch plus a notch at the top using a screw driver, move the flywheel left or right to get a spline lined up. If you have an early 915 clutch lever, it makes a nice puller under the car once you have lined the TOB.
