915 Shift Coupler Leak???
I recently purchased a 1982 911SC and finding all kinds of wonderful things. I was doing some work on the car last night and notice some transmission fluid leakage coming off the shift coupler panel. Does anyone know where this might be coming from? Are their some seals behind the panel that might be leaking? I am just trying to get a sense of where the leak might be coming from.
Thanks, Chuck |

It must be your front seal that is leaking, hell when TRE placed my SS kit, they showed me the dust cover was full of trans fluid.
Post a pic and we can be certain.

+1 on the shift rod seal. It CAN be done without gearbox removal.

Almost Banned Once

A few years ago mine started leaking. Not a lot but enough to be worrying. So as a temporary fix I cut an old bicycle tube to the right size and slid that over the shifter rod and alloy housing. Taped and zip tied in in place and drove it LEAK FREE for about 3 years... (Make sure it's a bit longer than it has to be so it doesn't bind and interfere with shifting.) I finally fixed the problem properly after I had to replace my gearbox because the differential had failed.

I'd say it is tricky, rather than it's difficult...
you'll want a couple of the seals (in case you mess up one of them), some good light sources & a collection of pick tools pick out the old one; check for burrs with your finger; bandage finger; deburr & push in the new seal |

Or cut the rubber boot off so the trans oil will leak onto the ground, and not into the tunnel of your car.

If the shaft is scratched or damaged, replacing the oil seal won't help. Shift the transmission into 2nd, 4th or reverse, which will pull the shaft foward, and inspect it closely.

I once had a car with a bent shift rod. That can happen when removing the engine if not done correctly. Anyway, it would leak if left in first gear because the shift rod is pushed into the engine more than 2nd gear or reverse. With the rod pushed in furthur the bend makes the rod offset more and causes the seal to leak. Most likely you just need to put in a new seal, but check to make sure the shaft isn't bent.
