Question Stupd Question: Valve Spring Compressing

OK time for another stupid question. As I am on an extreme budget I have been doing everything very slowly. I have my heads off and have purchased everything for a valve job (new valves, springs, guides,.....) and the exhaust and intake valve sping compression tools. After a weekend of working on barns, horses, and mowing I finally was able to sit down with the six heads to remove the valves and replace.

There are no studs long enough to place the compession tools on. Am I supposed to remove the short studs in the middle of the head and replace with longer ones? If so, only the Intake compressor appears to angle appropriately. Are these designed for use only when attached to the vehicle and then, to what stud would they attach? Should I return these and get the Baum tool? Quite frustrated. Thanks,

David

If I am understanding you correctly you have removed the heads from the cam towers is that correct? If so you need to reasemble them silghtly 4 or 5 bolts to make the tools you bought work. If you have the tools sold by companies like automotion they are designed to be used while the heads are still attached to the cam towers. I just went through this. Its a little tricky to do but it is doable. I hope this helps.

If you can still return those two tools, that is what I recommend! A standard universal 'C-clamp' type valve-spring compressor will work just fine on yiour bare heads ... at a price of about 1/3 of the combined cost of those two tools!

Hey, we were in Groesbeck today! Came in on 1245 from Prairie Hill, went out and back on 14 to the north (visited Fort Parker). Then drove west on 164 -- straightest piece of road I've seen since driving through southern Iowa on US34 many years ago. Nearly 18 miles with nary a bend!

No advice on your valve problem, I've only ever used a C-clamp type. You are going to have your seats reground, aren't you? Did you find someone in area that you would trust to do machine work on your engine?

Bravo: Thanks man, knew I was missing something simple....Put the heads back onto the Cam Towers, tightened a couple of bolts, and we're there. Tooooo simple! Would rather of had the Baum tool for this, but I borrowed a knock-off American brand, made in USA, and the tool bent. Didn't want to buy another one, so went with Pelican's proferred tools.

Bob: You got within two miles of the house. Give me a message and stop by. You can see what the innards of the 3.0 look like. Their all over my garage, wife loves it (she wants it back together as much as I do). and just think, I drive 164 every day to work in Waco! Need the car, not too many cops....At least there are hills to go up and down and the occassional black cow at night that is running loose on the highway. Love the country!!
