Altenator Nut- thread pattern?
Anyone know the thread pattern for the altenator nut. My car is a 77 with 2.7. The nut is starting to strip, the bolt part is fine though (thankfully)
Thanks Shawn

Shawn,
If it is a Motorola/Marchal, then the threads are M16 x 1.0. Bosch shafts are M14 x 1.5.

OK now I am confused!
I bought a new nut, a 16mm x 1.0 die for the altenator shaft, but the die will not "catch" to rethread the shaft!!!! ![]() I am thinking it must be a left hand thread shaft and right hand thread die. Does anyone know if the shaft is right hand or left hand thread??? I am going to go to "Bolt Supply House" tommorow, but I am doubtful they will have a bolt. If they do I will see if the bolt will thread into both??? I am mad because I can't drive my car, and the weather is GREAT here in Alberta!!! ![]() Shawn

Shawn it is right handed. I just went thru the same thing with my 76s. And the thread's on mine were (SUPER FINE) and not a bolt or nut co. in town had any thing even close. I went to my shop Guy and we dug thru his bolt bins for an hour and found one. Look real close at the thread's on the nut and then the shaft and see if they match the threads on the shaft. The shaft threads are harder than the nut. I striped all the threads out of the nut and didn't hurt the ones on the shaft

Thanks Greg, I thought so. I have a new nut already, my old one was stripped completely, but my shaft us marred a bit, not allowing the nut to start. I need to clean those up too, so now I need a die that will work, or use a file????

Well if it's not to bad a knife edge file is what I would try. A die might not be that easy to find or at least a single one anyhow Good luck

Thanks everyone IT IS FIXED!
My brother-in-law and I used a thread file and then once the nut started, we tightened it a bit, then loosened (etc etc) until it would go on. I am HAPPY But I now have the proper die for it M16 x 1.0 if anyone needs to borrow it ![]() Shawn
