Question AC Thermostat Temperature Control 85 any Issues?

Hey Fellas,

I am in the need of replacing my AC Temperature Control Assembly on my 85.

Question:

1. Is the new Capillary Tube pliable (flexible) and not brittle like the old OEM's?
2. Did the dial rotate properly with being stuck, I was told the replacement have issues with it not completely rotating to 10:00 position to the left
3. Does the new one come with the Brass Tube to insert into the Evaporator, if not is the part available or did you make one?

I understand the superceded part needs to be modified to fit on the center console but I would like to know what to expect.

over,

Jim

If I was you I'd just upgrade to the Griffiths unit with the new fan control unit.

I put a new one in (from our host) last year. It's bigger than the original. I ended up cutting out the bottom of the AC switch housing, under the thermo switch. You can also check out this Pelican tech article - Pelican Technical Article: A/C Temperature Switch Modification

The capillary tube is just as delicate as the original. Try not to bend it too sharply.

The dial's travel is not the same with the new switch as the original. If I remember correctly I didn't get full travel until I cut out the switch housing.

The one I got did not come with a new brass tube, but there was nothing wrong with mine, so no problem reusing the existing tube.

I wish Griffiths made one of these so it would match the Griffiths varible fan speed unit next to it. Making the knobs match is down low on the punch list this year. (But having a varible speed fan is wonderful - I highly reccomend it).

I searched in vain a few years ago to find a replacement that would fit without modifications. Went to multiple auto AC parts houses (there's quite a few in Tucson) and couldn't find anything close. In the end, I opened up the old switch and found that it was full of 25 years worth of dust & lint. So with liberal application of electrical contact cleaner I cleaned out all the crud and made sure all the contacts were clean, reinstalled and its worked fine ever since. You might want to give it a try.
