Another '89 only question

This was the first year that the Porsche alarm was activated with the ignition key, and a separate key wasn't needed. In addition to the light in the key, there is a small white chip. I "think" I remember that this was a security chip, and the car will not start without it. In other words, if I have a spare key made, will it work?

I can have a trial key made for $5-10, but you're free.

Porsche was ahead of its time, but you are giving their alarm technology too much credit. My 89 came with the factory alarm and I have at least 2 keys that were made for the car that work fine. The alarm mechanism is part of the ignition lock.

Have you tried your local dealership? I'm sure they would know what needs to be done to get this resolved considering what dealerships go through when preparing a car for sale.

I bought a Carrera 2 key for my SC (1989). A lock smith cut it to suit my 78SC and it works perfectly.
I've had it open to replace the battery but mine doesn't have any chip inside. Maybe they didn't use this type of security in the C2.

I just took this photo. As I said this is a Carrera 2 key not 3.2.

No chip in my 89 either. I have one spare key that is all metal with no case and it works fine. If I understand correctly the alarm arms via the door locks either passenger or driver. No chip or ignition interface. Ignition switch has the same part # from 1974 to 1989 so I would say no chip.

No chip in my 89 3.2 key. They also started making Carrera 2s and 4s in 89 - maybe those had a chip in their key.

Peter,
Thank you for taking the time to open your key and take the picture. My little white 'chip' is between the copper strip holding the light bulb and the indentation in the black plastic. It seems that it may be as simple as a piece of Styrofoam holding things in place.
And thank you all, it makes me think that my memory (loose term) has served me ill.

If I recall correctly, my '95 993 still used the same tired old key that fits my current '86. It's not like 911 people have been resistant to change...

Agreed,..no chip use in any '89.

My alarm system on my '89 has served me quite well, presenting NO problems in 6 years!

BEST!
