Question 911sc Scraping Noise Solved

My '82 911SC just started to make a rythmic metal scraping noise when coasting. It sounds like what I have heard from my other cars in the past when the CV joints were going. However this occurs when driving straight and there is no clanking noise. The noise does not change in response to braking or turning. The noise seems to improve under acceleration (independant of being muffled by engine noise). I looked under the car and I see a small amount of fresh oil near the left inner CV joint boot. Further I jacked the car on each side and none of the calipers were seized. Does anyone have any ideas?

Checked your brake pads lately?

I had the car Maryland inspected 11/01. At that time I changed the rear pads and the front pads and all rotors were fine. I have not had the time to take off the wheels since the noise started. I suppose I can look through the fuchs and feel for grooves in the rotor?

Could some debry be in the drivetrain or caliper? Maybe a brake pad retaining clip popped?

I really need to get the wheels off and fully inspect the brakes. Unfortunately I have not had the time. I was just wondering if anyone else had similar experiences?

I second, Noah's suggestion. That's where I'd go first.

My .02c.

Pads are designed to run with a slight against the rotor pressure.. if they didn't, you'd have worse problems. So, a slight rhythmic scraping noise? Could be a rotor just a wee bit off straight. Do you feel any pulsing when coming to a stop? If not, I wouldn't worry a lot...

Thanks everyone.

I have taken all the wheels off and all pads, rotors and rotor shields are normal. The CV joints all look and feel normal. I cannot reproduce the scrape when the wheels are lifted. However, I localized the noise to the passenger rear wheel by rolling the car down the driveway (wife inside ).

I am able to reproduce a scraping sound when I try to turn the wheel with the hand brake engaged. The sound appears to be coming from movement of the cable assembly. Could this be moving around when the car rolls? I need to do a full adjustment of the hand brake anyways. Can the parking brake shoes get loose enough or have a broken spring that cause a scraping noise. BTW the parking brake appears to function well.

Hoorah.....

Finally had time last weekend to really check things out. The scrape was from the brake rotor shield.... however, it was rubbing on inside of the fuchs (not the rotor). It was very tricky to figure out because it only occured while weight was on the wheel and there were only very small scrape marks on the inside of the wheel and none on the rotor shield.

Feels great to drive with the confidence that the brakes and drivetrain are all fine.

Thanks again to everyone.
