Help diagnosing problem in 68 911

Some background: 1968 Coupe, 2.2 S with Webers, Perma-tune box. Car was warm and performing well when it suddenly died. I pulled over and tried to restart it. It cranked, but wouldn't start. Strong gas smell so I assume the fuel pump is OK. Sat for a few minutes and tried again. Car started and ran for 10-15 seconds then died. I checked all fuses and connections and after about 5 minutes I tried again. It started and ran, but had a few misses then car ran normally getting me to my destination about 10 miles away.

Any ideas where to start on tracking this down?

Thanks
Peter M

An item to check would be fuel filter in bottom of tank, crud can block and then clear itself to allow intermittant problems.

Peter,

The distributor points have closed up so you are not getting spark (or intermittent).

Clean the points contact surfaces and reset to about 0.30 mm.
Be sure and check the timing at 6000 rpm – should not be more than 30º total advance.
Remember to use the highest octane premium fuel you can find.

Yes, check for your fuel flow.
Take a long fuel hose from the engine compartment after the fuel filter forward to the fuel fill cap.
Let the fuel flow for a while.
Measure the flow rate using a calibrated container and stopwatch: should be at least 0.90 liters/minute.

Best,
Grady
