Ignition upgrades?

For an 8.5-1 comp ratio carbureted 2.7 rs motor, what is the ignition upgrade of choice? I like the electromotive hpv1 (obsolete) but still effective, or an MSD 6al box ?
Your thoughts please.
Car is set up aggressively, but will not see track time, just canyon bonsai runs.
Thanks for advice,
Kevin

I would just stick with the stock Bosch CDI and points. You could try an optical trigger or a magnetic pickup but it seems like they inevitably have problems. The points need maintainance/replacement at intervals but seem to just keep on working.

Stock seems to work pretty damn well and I can't believe I have the org. CD unit in my car-that just amazes me. But I do have a crane fireball coil which I only installed when the org. coil gave up the ghost over 10 years ago.

You'll get about as many "thoughts" as there are Pelicans.. I run a 6AL unit on my car.. I have it mounted under the driver's seat.. I noticed an immediate idle qualiity improvement.. If you choose that set up, make sure you use the proper coil, depending on where you mount it.. If you have a point distributor, I'd use a Pertonix unit, I've had very good results with these units over the years.. If you are concerned about failure, put your points in the glove box; it's easy to change back. If your 6AL fails (rare) you can get one at about any local parts chain store.. Also, I would search the forum for previous threads and read up other's experiences..

I have a msd6al, with a new JBracing distributor. It's a pretty slick unit. It's just like the one for a twin plug, but it is for 6 plugs.
It is entirely adjustable for the advance curve and has a magnetic pick up.

Works good.
