MAF question

I was replacing the MAF / aircleaner gasket and noticed that my MAF had a hole drilled in the red outlined area. It looked like someone had stuffed rolled paper in there to block it. The hole was drilled at a downward angle and there were several passages visible. Was there a vacuum feed off there at one time? Maybe one of the PO's mechanics tried to diagnose a problem there? (I've had the car 8 months.)
Anyhow, I siliconed a thin aluminum plate over the hole to seal it up. Maybe it's my imagination, but the car seemed more responsive after that.
thanks, Bill K

That is a technique to remove the CAP that is immediately below to gain access to the AFR 3MM Allen Hex adjustment valve on your AFM ( or as you said MAF).

Place your finger there if there is a hole it has removed and been molested. Silicon in that hole is going to do nothing.

thanks Draco. all this motronics is new to me and I'm still learning the terminology of the components. where is the 3mm adjusting screw - in the afm or below it in the manifold? when did the hole stop appearing?

Literally, put your finger right below that hole in the pic, feeling upward on the AFM. You should feel a hole or even a cap if the PO/Wrench put it back. Maybe size of a dime in OD. If cap is gone, you can actually fit the tip of your finger in it, if not fat like my monkey hands

The 3MM adjuster is in there.

The hole was tapped in by the PO/Wrench, 3.2's with out the hole has never been tampered with, kind of rare, due to change in Gas Quality over the years.

Probably, that is the only way known to remove the cap without destroying it.

Sorry to still be so ignorant about this.
Okay, I still have the cap on the bottom.
From the layout of the afm, I assume that the 3mm adjusting screw is accessed throught the hole after the cap is removed and is toward the top of the afm?
Is this a method of changing the air/fuel ratio to effect emissions or performance?

"Is this a method of changing the air/fuel ratio to effect emissions or performance?"

Actually, it will do neither.

1. With regard to emissions, it only affects the idle mixture and only if the
O2 sensor is disconnected. Obviously if the idle mixture adjustment is
changed beyond the control limit of the O2 sensor, then the mixture
adjustment can affect the emissions.

2. There's no performance affect.
