Back to Porsche to align. But wait, there's more........

OK,
Got it all back together, except the rocker panel covers in case they needed to get at rear torsion bars.
Took to local Porsche dealership--no one else in WNC wanted to do alignment, suggested go to dealership.
In at 9AM--out at 1PM. My wallet (and butt) twitched the whole time.
  • even up ride height
  • 4 point alignment,caster camber and toe
"about 2 hours" per shop manager, Need ride somewhere?
off to Moose Cafe for breakfast and the WNC farmers market. Bought 4 big boys (tomatoes, for those of you of the west coast pursuasion), and picked out 2 koi for the pond, to be picked up later--1 hr max in a transport bag--I never made it back......

Called in 2 hrs: "its taking longer than we expected (butt/wallet twitch) probably at least another hour."

"ride back, please"
"you sure? it's gonna be a while" (butt/wallet twitch)
"yes, please"
Offer driver a tomato upon arrival--'we've got plenty in the break room, but thanks.'

On arrival, snuck over to door into the inner santum and peered in.

There, jacked up on the alignment rack, was the wee beastie. Beneath her, on the spotless white floor was labcoat Dave, and about 14 other labcoat Daves, looking at wee beastie's bottom--bunch of perverts...................

I snuck in, ignoring the "none shall pass" sign, and joined the prodigious panoply of labcoats under wee beastie.
  • couldn't get rear driver toe to spec
  • couldn't get front caster and camber to spec

got weights in the car? How much? "

they pointed at a very large labcoat Dave; about 250. "

"he'll do."

"Have you a bigger hammer?" I said.

"we here at porsche do not use hammers"

"bulls*it, make it a big one"................out came the hammer/s

the sway bar bushings were new, putting the squeeze on the sway bar, so much so that they were keeping the spring plate/eccentric from adjusting the rear driver toe. we loosened the eccentric (remember them? $65 each) and applied several "gentle" taps to the backside of the sway bar, and the rear toe came within alignment specs.

on the front, caster was out of their specs--"are your specs right?"
"our specs here at Porsche are never wrong!!!!!!", pointing at the new lithium crystal powered alignment tool with lots of laser hickys hanging off of it.

So I went away, to the showroom.
The dealership sells Porsche, Audi (showrooms open to each other), and VW (you have to go outside and around to get to the showroom for the great unwashed).
It's nice, but not an Atlanta, so inventory does not include turbo stuff.

I was drooling onto a Panamera ($150K), a Carrera Cab ($120K), and a carrera hardtop ($125K), when the cute sales lady asked which one was I going to buy.

"can't, all my $$ go into my '87 tutonic bit*h, the wee beastie".
"Is that your cute little car getting maintenance?" Got that alot while I was there, but the guys didn't call it "cute". It's such a chick magnet..............

"Yup"
"have you driven a new one?"
"nope"
"want to?"
"yep--How fast?"
"well, I like to hear the engine when it goes really fast..................."
"OK" (I was getting a semi...........for the car)
"lets take that" she said, pointing at:

...................and went to get the keys.

It had 14 miles on it, and lots of spacey stuff.
Turned all off except A/C, and tried to back it out. Wouldn't move--front pads stuck to rotors--a little quick clutch petal fixed that.

Test circuit was about 5 miles, twisty hills and interstate. I let it warm up--didn't take long--hotter than the hinges of Hades outside.

In order to have the car make the appropriate sounds, I had to exercise it most vigerously.

One curve almost took us into the Kudzu (for you guys not familar with Kudzu, it's the official vine of the south; literally grows 1 ft a day. Whole herds of cows have been lost in the stuff)--they would have never got the Kudzu out of our teeth/grins when they recovered the bodies/car from around that poplar tree..............

After one round, she suggested that maybe I wanted to do it again, now that the tires had warmed up.

"OK"

We did it 3 times--came back smelling like hot new car.

Went back to the wee beastie and they had finished. "coudn't get the caster into tolerance, should be more vertical rather than the bottom pointing towards the front--won't hurt alignment."

"Is it more or less then when I brought it in?

"A little less, closer toward tolerance. Steering won't be quite as stiff."

"I liked it fine where it was-you sure your lithium chrystal powered alignment hooha spec is correct?"

"Absloutely!!!!!!! Porsche never makes a mistake!!!!!!!!!!! Und you vill like it!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

"How much?"

'$140.'

'Say what? You spent 4 hours on this thing! Don't I owe you some tech time?'

"nope, $140."

"OK, I'll spread the word--thanks, you did good--tell all the labcoats in back I appreciate their work."

Wee beastie drives great.

Now, all that's left to do is to put on the side pieces, detail it, and go cruising for wenches..................

Update--wee beastie

............it involves sex, drugs, and rock and roll. Well, at least hitting some rocks and sorting out how to roll over them after lowering the suspension . I've removed the skid plates and installed skid rollers. go to the above link to see results.

Hey guys,
According to our host it looks like that following years are different:

Porsche 911 Suspension - Page 7

PB-004
Rear Spring Plate Outer Bushing (2 per car, sold individually), 911/912 (1965-73), Each [More Info]$18.95

AND

Factory Spring Plate Bushings just listed as for 1965-67:

644-333-131-00-M100

My question is:

Can be JUST outer bushings change on Plastic ones?

I just wanted to get by till I will repair all suspension components and zinc plate them later.

Bushings on my car are squeaky and old... '68

Thank you.
-Youri.
