Stripped window mechanism
HI to all, my 78SC Targa driver window acted up and refused to go all the way up, i have to manually tilt the window to have it go up.
A little inspection revealed that one of the window mechanism bolt holes have stripped (not showned in pics). The one that is behind the hole in the interior door panel. (see pic). ![]() Whats the best way to repair this? - take the mecanism out and weld? - lower the mecanism to its lower point and try to weld from there? What are the thread of these bolts? Thanks!

Hi,
The bolts are metric 6mm (M6). The window mechanism has threaded tubes which also act as spacers. I'm not too sure whether it can be welded in position, it may be easier to remove it so you can match the spacers to make sure the mechanism sits correctly. The damage around the holes suggest the mechanism has been moving around for some time.

JIm , this is very usefull. How much a task it is to remove that mechanism? Any online instructions better than my Bentley?

You might try a Rivnut.
It is like a blind rivet...but with threads on the inside. They are applied with a tool that looks like a rivet tool...and come in open ended or blind ended types. I believe Mcmaster-Carr has them. Bob

I don't know of any online instructions but you could try the "101 Projects for your Porsche 911" book from our host. It has step by step pictures on how to remove the mechanism.

Take the mechanism out and repair the holes.
Get some 6mm washers and enlarge the holes in the sheet metal just enough for the washers to fit. Then weld them in place and grind down the welds flush to the door shell. Be sure to get the spacing right by measuring the mountings of the mechanism. As for the stripped threads of the mechanism, you can try a 6mm rivnut or drill and tap for an 8mm screw. |
