I just don't know, I'm feeling so depressed.
I have a long list of projects to do on my 87 Cab during my summer holidays (eight weeks July/Aug) but in the back of my mind I keep thinking....am I wasting money? I've got rust in several places requiring new panels and paint The previous owner paid for a quick paint job and it shows The brakes are exhausted The air cond is in need of serious repair The cab top is totally wasted The chin spoiler is missing and the valances and rocker covers need panel beating and painting Carpets are embarrassing AND...I starting to think the Cab was a mistake for a place like Hong Kong where its either freaking hot and humid (need good air) or bucketing with rain (leaks typically like a cab) I'm seriously thinking I need a SC coupe in excellent condition that I could probably buy cheaper than the Carrera and then throw money into it instead. Thing is, as you all know, there is such joy in working on your own project but when does the project become bigger than the car? I just remember in younger days having my cars spend more time off the road than on, pouring money into them and never getting it back. Then again I loved them all dearly and probably would do the same again. Its just that at 40yrs old I'd be keen to take my family cruising in a ride of joy and pride rather than working every weekend and then selling it because what I really wanted would never come from the Cab. I know the SC's don't have any better air-con than the Carrera, but I don't want the 964 and anything else is too expensive. I want to race again next year in China (Zhuhai) and the coupe would be a far better alternative but I do love the roof-off feeling. I don't like the Targa look (personal) so that's not an option. Do any of your worry of these things? You all seem so together in your projects and plans - congrat's to you. I wonder how many of you a) Bought the right 911 first off b)Have changed 911's to get the one you wanted c) Have bought a 911 and are dissatisfied and want to change Okay...stop ranting Mark. Good luck wioth your projects guys. Cheers Mark:D |
I'm currently rebuilding all 4 calipers, installing SS lines, and then flushing the system w/ some new ATE fluid.
Gosh I need to hurry up and get this done! Why do I have to be so busy lately!?! It's been 3+ weeks since I've driven the car and I don't see me finishing my project for at least another 12-14 days. :-( Agggghhh. Oh, almost forgot, I also have some Mobile 1 snythetic and a new oil filter ready to go in as well. -T |

As long as you're doing the tie rods, why not finish up the job by relubing the steering rack? Then you'll not have to touch the steering system again for a long while. Disassembly and reassembly of the steering rack is a piece of cake. I just did mine two weeks ago. You'll be surprised how little grease is inside there, and how much grease SHOULD be in there. A Clymer 914 service manual I have has a nice procedure and exploded diagram if you'd like a copy of it. It's really not needed, but it gives some good info. like torque specs and such. Warren recommends this ya know............... |

I am having just the same thoughts. Bought a cab for my wife, wanted a coupe for my self. At the price I paid (£10,500) I reckon I would have bought a heap of trouble whatever model I chose. If you can sell it reasonably easily doi, and get something solid to work with, especially if you are racing it. If racing means track days etc, find out if they allow a cab on the track. Mine has visited a few with the PO. |
Here are some photos of the DART Auto PCA/SCCA club racer. We had this car together for a couple races at the end of last year and have been working on some major changes for this summer.
