what's with the SC thing?
OK, I know that this sounds really bad, and shows that I'm totally wet behind the ears (even though my engine is also air cooled)but I keep reading about the SC thing and I'm not sure I get it. I just recently bought an 83SC Cab (hence my screen name) and I love it. Its a blast. Period. Dot. But through all of these posts, I have to wonder, did I just get lucky and stumble into the really cool group by accident
![]() Can someone fill me in on exactly how lucky I am - and why. Of course that falls into the other than the obvious that get to play in a pcar on a regular basis. No offense to the non-SC folks out there - I'm not looking to start a turf war - just try to "get it". ![]() Adam |

Adam,
You answered your own question with the following: I just recently bought an 83SC Cab (hence my screen name) and I love it. Its a blast. Period. That is the point. Nothing too fancy you can't work on it yet still has all of the fun when driving. Congrats on the excellent choice! Maybe you stumbled into the cool group, but maybe subconsciously you knew what it was about all along. Don't worry about offending "the non-SC folks out there," just keep on having fun and don't listen to their nonsense! Enjoy it!

Sometimes your pride is all you've got. The SC owners, confused over what the two letters might actually stand for, apparently got together and decided that if they couldn't be the strongest or the most nimble, they could at least...
take over the entire world. So they did. It started with stickers. It will probably end with front bumper 'update kits' and intake restrictors for those with more than three liters at their disposal. Head studs will be pulled out, willy nilly, in the name of conformity. We'll all come to realize that George Orwell's '1984' actually came true between 1978 and 1983. The rest of us just stand back, in a kind of awe. We may not want their cars, really, but we'd kill for their zeal and their organizational skills. ![]()

Adam,
To balance the matter at hand, take a drive in a good early car, pref. with mechanical fuel injection. You might then enter the World of nimble, light, precise 911s. Before the age of power everything, plastic bumpers, and power brakes stealing the feel of braking. ![]() Seriously, though. The early cars are really a different thing with a much more in touch feel, and no frills. It's really whatever you're in to, of course, but early cars are fun.... Try one.... |

Saffs, once upon a time I had a '77 911s Targa, the last of the narrow tails. Guards Red. Had it fifteen years. Maybe that's not an "early" car. We used it up, just didn't want to keep after it any more. Wish I had it back, I think. I never intended to drive this 914 one inch on the street. It's not anything like the 911, but for all out flogging, it'll do. A sweet 911 on fresh tires, running at the top of its game is an experience unique to the world. Even if its got some plastic on it.

Its nice to dream, but to take over the world someday they'll need to upgrade to the Real Thing and stop driving a stopgap SC (Substitute Carrera)

SCs are well known to be super realiable (except chain tensioners and air boxes...) and of course super cool and super fun!! They are not the fastest or the most expensive but they are well....Super!!
SC="Super Carrera" need I say more? Welcome to the SC world! ![]()

All of Porsche's children are lovable, even the 912s. Each progressive iteration of the 911 has its strengths and maybe even weaknesses. The early cars are lighter, more nimble, more seat-of-the-pants, yoke between your legs, barnstorming kind of thing. But they are also noisier and arguably finicky and probably require more regular attention. Later cars are quieter, smoother and more powerful, with more amenities, but they are also heavier and leave the pilot with a feeling of disassociation from the road environment.
And Jack knows that there is at least one group that likes duckbills. Other duckbills. I happen to feel that the SC is an excellent combination or compromise of features. It is not too much heavier than the early cars but it is much more civilized. A superior daily driver with nearly the HP and torque of the Carreras but less weight. From here, I lean toward the early cars. Sorry my SCWDP friends, but those early cars are prettier. I could also do without power sunroof, power mirrors and power drivers' window (power passenger window is handy) and the 100 lbs they probably represent. In fact, a fire-breathing 1800-lb early car with every thing gone but the seat, steering wheel and engine would be a nice second 911. In the meantime, I am delighted with my daily driver (when I get her engine back together) '83 SC. So, it's a personal preference thing.

Adam, I really don't know if you are just setting us up with a question like that - but "you the man!", not just an SC (which automatically elevates you to greatness) but a '83 -wow. Adam you the man alright, you need a sticker Each side of the car

To balance out the platypus dig, let me give equal time to any early car detractors out there.
This beauty is currently for sale on ebay: Why oh why couldn't they have started galvanizing sooner?

I remember I just bought my SC and discovered this board...I was on cloud nine...Finally owned a porsche
then I see this guy with posts about a 3.6L transplant...I go to his site and see the playpus comparisson and my ego hit the floor... I hate that side to side comparison... but I can say that I am comfortable with my SC ownership... they are SUPER CARRERAs.... |

I was going to start screaming but I see that Jack is being fair after all... no wonder they call him a "Mod-er-ator."
![]() Never mind these Non-SC owner types... you do of course notice the sheer amount of non-SC owners responding to this thread. Pure Non-SC owner envy, shining though. We've seen this happen time and time again.... sigh.... so sad. Let me be the first to formally welcome you to the "Plot". Make sure you order a set of stickers from Mr. "Z". You'll be amazed. Sport them proudly. Nothing can stop destiny... we will DOMINATE! ...and as a former Corvair owner... I want to say that I officially object to the Nader reference... ![]() Welcome aboard! .....also... is it just me or is that White 911 not even a SC... sure looks like a Carrera club sport to me...

Yeah, you might be right about the impact-bumper picture not even being an SC. Like all isolated xenophobic types, I have a hard time distinguishing the different flavors of post-73 cars. Now, the differences between a 72 and a 73, that's easy...

I'm sorry , american friends, but all of you are wrong
![]() the ultimate link between pre and post 73, with all the benefits of each period is : Carrera 3.0 !!! non powered brakes, light weight, sound, mythic "300 km/h" tachymeter (like the RS, but at 6), still shiny rims, beautiful polished spokes (but in 6' & 7'), Rs flares, pretty little crank from the RS (less inertia), shorter gear box, but galvanized body, efficient heating, aluminim case and most of bottom motor from the '75 Turbo, more comfortable seats, 200 bhp, R+F sway bars, etc... The car was so well born that it was only ROW ![]() only remains two defaults: ugly US bumpers (I agree with your theory, Jack ![]() PS: I'm kidding, of course.... But ![]()

Hey you, 83911sc, - - - not only did you purchase the best Porsche model, but you got one that was manufactured for only one year. 1983 is the ONLY year that an SC Cabo was made. There were no Cabos made prior to 83, and in 84, of course, Porsche made the Carrera Cabo, which we all know is slightly inferior to the SC!

well, quite a response for only 8 hours of post time,
Bill was definitely on the right right track when he said ----Adam, I really don't know if you are just setting us up with a question like that ---- sometimes its great to stir the pot a little bit - especially if I could learn a whole bunch at the same time. OK, after reading this, I think that I'm ready to take the plunge and do something I've never done in my years of car ownership - BRING ON THE STICKER. |
