DME Relay Question? Use O.E. or aftermarket?
I noticed Pelican has the original DME Relay for about $100, and an aftermarket one for about $25. Has anyone had good or bad luck using the aftermarket one? I am just buying one for a backup as it seems to be good insurance on a road trip!
Thanks in advance. |

They are built in various countries...get two if you buy, aftermarket.

Don't buy the URO one. I have seen them bad right out of the box.

Get a failed genuine porsche one from someone for free. Pop the cover off and reflow the solder joints yourself. Now you have a free working DME relay. The reason they fail is because they get too hot, and the original solder joints crack.

+1. URO is Pure Junk. JW's right on the money, there's not too many discount aftermarket parts that work well with these cars, you're better off spending the $$$.

I just picked up a spare DME relay from our host the other day.
Got the $25 one - it's a KAE (I think) made in Germany. |

The KAE's have been fine for me. Quite frankly, I forgot that Porsche had an OEM unit. At 4X the price, I am good with the KAE one. I carry a spare.

My KAE failed after one year. Fortunately I ordered and received a spare 3 days before it failed. This time, I was able to replace the DME relay in 5 minutes. I now carry two spares - KAE of course...

I just bought one on the Vertex website for $25. It says OEM in the product description, but they sent me a URO. Is URO an OEM supplier?

They can't even make a decent rubber hose.

+1, there.
I've several laying around, as I change this damned thing out preventatively....one day, when bored (I guess), I'm gonna' slap 'em on a power supply and have a static measure of contact(s') voltage drop...(that is 'unloaded but switched"). I recall changing this out one time (years ago) and SWORE the car ran a bit better (could be full of it, too....) Clearly that DME relay is to switch voltage (fuel pump and DME), and do it with minimal loss... As to non-catastrophic failures of this device, I wonder if the contacts become resistive enough (to any serious degree) to drop the voltage to both DME and Fuel Pump? As well, I think I''l disassemble a few and have a look at the materials used to construct it... Best! Doyle
