Finally an Easy Question! Engine Cover Latch Adjustment

My question, Is it the Rubber Stops or the Lock tube Spring that causes the Lid to rise up when you pull the Handle?

I adjusted the Rubber Stops to the Max Length and sometimes when I pull the handle, the Engine cover does not rise enough to open it.

I put some Plastic Pads when these touch the car and this temporarely removed the problem and I ordere new ones.

My other thought is to shorten the length of the tube that holds the spring to make the spring tighter an pull the lid tighter against the rubber blocks.

I have already dealt with the cable which has a sweet Spot. If you go past it will not lock. Any ideas?

Engine lid opening.....

Do you have one of the pneumatic struts in place on the driver side hinge? I believe that the strut is what actually opens the lid when the cable is pulled. If you are using a wing on your car, you might need to add a second strut on the right hinge like the ones on the turbo cars. Hope this helps.

I actually have "3" Struts on the left side! I never thougth about the Strut doing anything other than attempting to hold up the wing and then only when Hot and down hill! (I mean the down hill part because Up hill the weight is farther away from the pivot point!

WIth a LOT of people here using a stick to hold up the trunk lid I surely hope that is not the key to my delima.

The Locking Tube Spring, pops her up when you pull the lever in the door well.

If you have a Carrera or Turbo Tail, it is too heavy and the best setup is to use a turbo arm on the passenger side with fitment for the strut to even the pressure out on the lid.

3 struts, wow that is alot.

Not new but I also plan to put a new strut on the Passenger side and then have 4!

That was my Original thinking and wondered if I may need a new spring, or adjust it longer or shorter to put more pressure on the rubber stops or to shim the old one for more Pop up pressure. I could not come up with the name Locking tube spring to save ly life but that is exactly what it is!

Vincent! 3 on 1 side? That is bad. when I had just 1 it would push the lid over to the passenger side and the rubbing caused the paint to disappear all the way down to bare metal...

It is my experience that the spring will pop it up. The rubber stops are used to adjust the height of the lid such that it is even with the 1/4 panels when closed. If your spring is too weak you can shim it on the lid side. I believe the latch only goes in and compresses the spring perhaps 3/8" or so. If you shim it a 1/4" that might solve your issue unless your tail is huge and heavy... might take more then. If you shorten the post you may lose the ability to lock it closed.

My process for adjusting lids:

1) adjust rubber stops such that lid is even with 1/4 panels
2) adjust post such that it enter the lock. Use a pin to keep lock open
3) adjust the lock so it also releases the post. make sure you have something there to manually open it if your cable setting can't otherwise you may be stuck with a closed engine lid for a while!

I never had to shim the spring, but I would do it after the above steps if needed.

AMEN!!

FOr the record, the shocks are very weak and will only hold the lid open when the engine compartment is hot! I have really gotten tired of buying new Lift Cartridges every few years so I took the worn out one and set them up very nicely with 1 in the middle and one on each side (Used a long bolt on each end). It works very smoothly now. That is also why I stated that if I buy a NEW Shock, I will mount it on the other side

I was fairly sure of everything you said but I have a Chevy Astro Van that the rubber stops make the lid pop up! I just ogt new Stops today because at the MAX Length (Totally unscrewed) they just barely line up the lid when closed. The Idea of Shimming the spring was my next idea and thinking about How was the problem. I just got some 2 to 3 MM thick washers with 13 MM ID that may do the trick inside the spring cap or between the cap and the lid to keep the install height the same.

With your ideas I can resolve this comfortably. I think I will stop messing around and either make up something to mount the shock to the right side hinge or get a Kit. I have so much going on trying to keep me from installing the new Electric Power steering Unit I have for the 911 with AC. I know my wife is going to love it and at the Curb between to close cars parked, SO am I!

You could just get rid of the shocks and use a prop

I am afraid that I am too vain to allow anyone to see me working on my "PORSCHE" and holding up the lid with a Stick! I have that little device that clicks in front that holds the Hood up there and wish they made one for the engine cover.
