Ticking sound

Good Day to All,

I just bought a 1972 911T with a 2.4MFI engine. The car is running fine. I would just like to ask if it is normal to hear a ticking sound at the engine? It seems to be coming from the left side of the engine near the distributor. Also When I'm at a stop with the car at idle the pressure gauge on my dash is at zero but when I step/rev on the gas pedal the pressure needle goes up. Does this mean when the car is at idle there is no oil pressure? The temp gauge indicates 180 to 220 depending on traffic. Are these symptoms normal?

Any info or suggestions would be highly appreciated.

Thank you very much,
Ronald

Dunno about the ticking, could be the fuel pump; wouldn't worry too much, but find a good independent Porsche shop and ask them to listen to it. Oil pressure in these cars drops to near zero at idle; probably nothing to worry about, but see above. Your oil temps seem normal; don't sweat it until you see 240 or so, depending on the oil used. If you didn't already do so, take the car to a good indy, and have them do a leakdown test and general check.

Do you have a vacuum line going to the distributor? I have had problems with the advance plate ticking in the distributor due to the cam overlap causing uneven vacuum on that line. Pinch the line off and see if it goes away.

In a garage turn off the light and spray mist of water from a spray bottle. If you see errand sparks, that would be your ticking.

Sounds like the vacuum advance on the distributer has a weak diaphram. The actuator arm taps on the side of the distributor body.

Service the distributor that should fix it.
