It's been a while since we've done this.
If I remember correctly, the last time we did this I had my motor in 500 different pieces. I'm interested in hearing what everyone is up to lately. Especially Natchamp and the "Beast". I guess I'll start off, even though it will be a week before I get to play. First the engine is coming out so I can fix the oil leak. While the engine is out I'm going to have the gearbox rebuilt. While the car is down for the tranny rebuild, it will give me time to do the following: -Flush the brake fluid, install SS lines and paint the calipers black. -Install Turbo tie rods, bump steer kit and Weltmeister strut brace. -Remove rear view mirror and reglue it so I don't have that damn turd colored glue to look at from the outside. -Replace all engine decals so my bay doesn't look embarassing any more. (This also includes a SCWDP sticker on my fan strap... it's worth a shot ![]() -New ignition switch cover, and knob faces, and heater handle knobs...yes I was the schmuck who didn't redye them ![]() Install my overpriced Momo Combat shift knob... (I couldn't resist it... it has the burlwood insert... it'll look great with my burlwood dash face. ![]() -New gauge glass faces. -Numbered oil temp combo gauge kit. -Install late model power seats, install new carpet kit, RS door panels, rear jump seats and AJUSA Dead pedal. -Install the 930S steering wheel spacer so I can actually fit my fingers behind my 930S steering wheel. ![]() -Driverside door stay reinforcement kit (might have to take it to Tyson). -Install new targa top rain gutters. -New door seals, targa bar seals and a few other misc. seals. -Install VDO Cylinder head temp gauge, VDO voltmeter, and Nordskog Fuel/air meter in my 930S center console. -Install Cat bypass pipe and single in dual out FLowmaster muffler experiment. -Replace my crushed oil lines and install a Carrera oil cooler w/ fan. -Install new ignition wires, heater blower motor, and aluminum hoses... yes, Pelican finally hooked me up . ![]() -I've bought a pedal cluster bushing kit for future use... I haven't had any problems yet. -Install my new Factory short shift kit. -Have H-5 rings and Carrera valance panel prepped, painted and installed. -Oh, and how could I have forgotten about my new transmission ground strap??? ![]() .... Once I get a new dash, windshield and paint on this thing... I'll be just about happy. ![]() I know it's nowhere NEAR as cools as building my own paddle shifting system...but hey... a guys gotta start somewhere! So,...what's everyone else doing? -

Sounds like you've done some thinking about this. I wish I had the guts to rip my motor out. Maybe next November, I'm sure you guys wouldnt let me get in too much trouble. It runs fine but I would like to get it out, clean it up and become a little more familiar with it. Is it difficult for a first timer, I have some mechanical experience but would still consider myself a novice. I just dont want the wrench getting all my money, Id rather buy tools and do it myself.

Dropping the motor is not really that hard...
...as long as you are doing it using the proper tools... don't, I repeat, Don't attempt to remove the engine with a tranny jack. Baaaad ju ju. I just bought one of these from Pelican the other day. It looks like it'll do the trick.

Well, where to start.
Engine is currently split. Heads done, cylinders honed. Main bearings are waiting me at the post office. Oil pump bearings etc etc.. Lot's of gaskets etc...new cylinder rings. Well, 500 pieces like yours Leland. Have to paint my new original rear hood (removed the so-called-turbo tail, because it was some poor aftermarket thingie, too big), paint the mirrors red (eew, they are barbie pink now) Brake master cylinder needs to be fitted back to the car. Flush all the brake lines. Did the pedal cluster so i decided to check the master cylinder at the same time. Went through the front suspension couple weeks ago, sandnblasted and painted the whole front suspension. Fuel tank is out of the car, it was cut in two, sandblasted from in and out. Was welded back shut, tested for no leaks, now needs a paint. Interior is being redone again. Right now I am refitting panels. Shawn Davis has sent me handmade interior lookalike carpets (plastic foam) so that I can rebuild new ones from felting. 30th of April is my birthday, I have to get the car back on the road. |

Leland,
Them's a whole mess o' projects! Unless you're going to hire Bruce Anderson to help you do it all before July, you're going to miss the Round-Up. That will NOT be acceptable to your faithful friends here in the Rainforest Region. What ever you do, just make sure that SC motor is running sweetly. This will be a drive you'll not want to miss!

Ohhh no...
I have no aspirations of having everything finished by July. Hopefully this stuff will keep me occupied for at least 6 months or so. Just need to get the big stuff done before the Hill Climb in May, and the Parade... hell when is the Parade, and of course... the SCWDP Round-up in July. Geez, I'd like to even attend JWs swap meet if my wallet will let me!

Wow, Leland, quite a list! Good luck with those projects and getting back home.
Well, I am going to do a "top end" on the 930. Just got Wayne's book and it looks soooo easy ![]() I have three broken head studs and that bad leaking sound under acceleration. I've been putting it off since October. Right now lining up an engine stand and hopefully a yoke. I saw that engine removal tool on ebay. So far I've got 4 other Pcar owners lined up, 2 hydraulic jacks and a couple of homemade heavy duty furniture dolleys. Who knows, maybe I'll do some documentation for the list. Best

Laland - I am not as ambitious as you. My list is about as long, but the actual itrems that will bet done before my kids get to high school is a different story!
BibBPainta - I am with you on the buying the tools and doing it myself, but my mechanic is such a good guy that it is the first time in my life I don't feel bad writing checks to this guy! Here is what I have been doing, and what I hope to get done soon: - put on SS brake lines and changed the brake fluid - added ATP blue - Changed the gasket for the oil level unit - it was leakinbg and was making a mess - just ripped out the shifting console to change the nylon cup and shift bushing but they were in good shape so I left them alone. Did find out that I have the factory short-shift unit installed. - Will be getting new tires soon (decided on Yoko AVS Intermediate?) WHat I have planned: - Want to replace the front struts with Bisletin - Want to install a front chin spoiler - I fell I should do these at the same time to add some front stiffness so I do not ruin the chin spoiler bouncing up the driveway! Also, how could I forget, ( I suspect I will get some grief for this!) I just installed a sub woofer and re-installed the amp professionally. I put the Infinity BassLink that I bought from eBay. It takes up more of my trunk that I thought it would (no more golf clubs in there!) but it gives me the sound I was looking for. With a cabriolet I need some power to hear! I have a few more stereo upgrades planned but no hurry on those.

Don't let anyone give you greif for putting a stereo in your car!
See that's the thing. Everybody has different desires/ambitions with their cars. Some are totally content with the way they're caars are. Some are into originality and show cars. Some are into aggressive mods for track/performance. Some are into stereos. Some are into just having a nice clean car. The thing is, although everybody wants something a little different...we all do what makes us happy. I'm sure that some will scoff at the fact that I'm replacing every little interior plug and knob cap. But hey, it makes me happy. I want it to feel like a new car when I sit in it. Btw, enjoy the oil level sender gasket install... it's loads of fun. ![]() ![]()

Projects
Leland, I know a little of what you're in for.
It all started when I tried to change out the trailing arm bushings but could not get access to the nuts because of the tranny being in the way. Engine and trans is now out, replaced all the Bushings, new Hollow Tbars 23/30, valve adjustment (made easier now with the engine out), spark plugs and a trans fluid change. I am sure it will go back together just fine, I just have to remember to take my time. For all you novices, the engine drop was easier than I expected. Except for someone running the jack, I dropped the engine by myself - read easy. I supported the engine/trans with a 3/4 sheet of plywood that was cut to match the bottom of the engine and transmission. I started with a quarter sheet that I bought at Home Depot and made a notch 8in x 8in in the center of one end to accomodate the hydraulic jack frame which moves up and down when you pump it and an ear that is 8 inches wide on the other end that is under the tranny. I will post a picture of it soon. The axle nuts came apart easy when I used the right tools, 3/4 inch drive. BigPainta - YOU CAN DO THIS... there is so much help on this BB

Great projects Leland
I also hope you have it ready for July. I have to get my interior back together, Engine back in and get ready to move across the country, and best of all patiently wait for Heidi to go into labour. We are 5 days over the due date ![]() I can't wait. Shawn

My project is a labour of love....tha car I have always wanted...and soon to be my daily driver I hope.
I found a 1969S in very nice condition here in British Columbia. The car is in very good mechanical condition and I am in the process of stripping it down to bare metal to give it a nice paint job (red, of course). I plan to use Dupont Imron, so that the maintenance of day to day driving will be easier. I am also replacing the shifter coupler bushings and guides with Delrin pieces I am making. Have already done the window-winder knobs (in aluminum) and the sunroof motor and drive. The saga continues!! Bob

Project list:
1. Get over this damned cold/infection thing 2. clean up the outside of this place, pruning, cut up the trees that were victims of the big blow we had this month, etc. 3. Get the P car's tires rotated & balanced, then up on jackstands for oil change, a bottom cleaning. Then clean & wax the topside, detail the interior, etc. 4. Go for a long day run...dunno where. Wherever Cindy wants, I guess...as long as the roads are dry & clean... |

Good to hear from you Leland. I have been working on my G50 conversion lately to get it completed. I am really missing not having the Beast on the road for the weekend bursts. I can't do anything more in the sequential shifting untill I get it back on the road with a normal shifter. I tell ya, now I know why I didn't put the G50 in at first. It's a real pain. I am just finishing up though. The motor and tranny is back in the car. And it is a extreemly tight fit. I had to take the supercharger off and a bunch of other stuff just to get it to fit up in there. I also installed new half shafts and new 31mm rear torsion bars. I had 27 b4 and even though it was stiff the car squated so hard when I got on it the rear tires would hit the fenders. I don't think I'll have the problems any more with 31s. I also put in the G50 shifter so that is ready to go. I am now working on the hyd clucth (the biggest pain of the conversion). I took out the pedal cluster and fabricated a bracket to it for the clutch master cylinder. Once I get that in its just a matter of buttoning everything up.
I have the sequential shifter to the point where I need to fabricate the mechanical part of it which I can't do untill I get it back on the road. I have designed my own printed circuit board so everything will be neat and right. I had an initial problem with the board but think I've figured it out. I'll post a pic later. I also have the basic programming done until I get the actual shifting mechanism to calibrate. I have incorporated a "sport" mode too. |

Paul, sorry your feeling under the weather. I've had a sinus infection for over a month and know how you feel.
You never fail to impress me Mark. The coolest thing about this board is that I get to tell people that I know some really smart guys. Shawn! You must be so excited! Horray for you and Heidi! So what about everybody else???
