carrera cooler without a fan?

I have a 79 911 with the trombone. The car runs fine, in the middle of the temp guage during normal driving. However, it runs much closer to the upper red zone on the track. I am not comfortable with this. I am considering the carrera cooler replica, available here, but was wondering ... If I run this without a fan, will it be more than adequate. That is, would it perform better than the trombone (which of course does not have a fan)? Obviously, on the track, a fan is probably not a concern, but around town ... ?

Anybody using this setup?

Your proposed setup would be similar to a factory install on many 911s, and as such may be inadequate when used in high ambient temperatures. The oil cooler is shrouded inside the fender location, not the best location for cooling. A fan is helpful to circulate air through it, especially at idle and reduced vehicle speeds. Other methods of ducting air to the cooler are suggested.

A front-mounted cooler is best, can be larger and thus more efficient, doesn't need a fan, but usually needs an appropriate front bumper to house it.

The fan was for sitting in traffic. If youre going around the track, what do you need the fan for?

I had a 79 SC with trombone type cooler and changed over to a finned style, temps did drop. A fan would be best but the finned style would be an upgrade. At the time I lived in New Orleans, high humity and temps. most of the year. Every little bit helps, you could install the fan at a later date if the Carrera type needs help.

It was my understanding that 28 row brass did better than the trombone, and the carrera cooler did better than the 28 row (even without the fan). Wouln't I be making two steps up in cooling if I went from a trombone to a Carrera?

Mocal makes lots of coolers. I assume yours is a fender mount / size? I am sure it would be an improvement over the trombone, which is what I was trying to find out with this thread. However, if your car runs plenty cool, you probably don't need it. The fender coolers usually rely on a complete shroud around the cooler, up against the fender to help funnel air through it. If you plan on installing it, you should probably buy / fab something like this for it to work properly.
