what does this belt do
what does this belt do??? i dropped the motor and want to seal everything and clean the motor up i cant take the fan shroud off without taking this piece off. my question is, can i just take the belt off, or is it like a timing belt where i have to have both lined up properly. any help would be very helpful. tony

That is the belt that drives the mechanical fuel injection pump. It is linked to the camshaft to which it is also timed so you get fuel injected at the correct time. Others may be able to help on how easy it is to get this timed again when reinstalling.

Save yourself some trouble.....mark the pully positions. .

so i just mark the pullies, slip off the belt and when i go to reinstall it, make sure the marks line up? that sounds pretty easy

Pretty sure.....I would turn the crank and see if the fuel pump turns 1:1.

Not 1:1. 360 degrees of crank rotation turns cam & MFI pump 180 degrees.

If I remember correctly...the factory tried changing the timing by one or two cogs on the 917's...and it made very little difference.
So I would think if you are close (within a tooth or so) you would be OK. Bob

Clean off all of the dirt on the edges of the pulley and you will see that there are already marks on both pulleys. Doesn't matter what position the marks are in when you pull the belt. When you reinstall the belt make sure the two marks are facing each other. Easy to do when the engine is out of the car.
