What is the trick to remove alt. Shroud strap

Pulled the alt shroud strap from A/C side. Was very difficult and I had to pound it out by distributor. Gotta be an easier way!,,,-anyone have a trick? Removed to Clean it up

Take the distributor out first, makes it a lot easier.

OK. so let me just ask this question. If I remove the distributor, how careful do I need to be about putting it exactly in in the right spot?

What year car do you have?

I would suggest you put the engine at TDC before you pull the dristributor. If you rotate the distributor at all the car will not run.

Very, it wont start if you don't. Put engine on TDC for cyl #1 before removing. I'm not familiar with 79 distributors but some of them have these sort of "teeth" at the base that meet the engine and can only be mounted in one position, so you can't go wrong. Just find out which kind you got.

yeah, I am not sure if that question of mine came out right. I do know the distrib has to be placed in exactly the same exact point, along with rotor. I figured I'd mark the rotor on teh casing and the notch, but then if the base turned or I did not put the distyrib in exactly right... I am wondering if it may be simpler to remove the A/C
compressor and the bracket? I really do not think I want to mess with the distributor.
I dropped the Shroud off to be powder coated, as well as the strap to be cleaned up and coated also. So when I put it back in, I dont't want to scratch the bejesus out of it after that you know.

Do that, put the engine on TDC for #1 cylinder, remove the distributor cap, look if the rotor is pointing at a notch, if it is you're good to go. If not right there where the rotor is pointing is TDC for #1, so mark it at the edge of the distributor and you can go ahead and remove it.

I have not tried to start it but I did pop up the dist. cap and marked the rotor to the case, case to the mount and slid it right out. Put in the strap and lined up the dist. and rotor. Easy. Straps on. That is def. The only way to do it, thx!
