915 Trans surgery for 3.6L conversion-"Your gonna do what!"

After much debate and deliberation, the time has just about at hand for my 82 SC (that thinks its an 86), to get a 3.6L. I have sat staring at it trying with all my might to will the thing in, but it hasn't happened. So....I guess its time to go to work on it! I have accumulated all the parts I need... but can't decide what to do with the transmission.

I have the original 82 915 that has been rebuilt. I was going to cut the flywheel sensor slot into its bell housing. The more I think about I don't like this idea. It seems to me that this could weaken the bell housing. The late model has a boss of extra aluminum that runs around the cut out. I suppose I could TIG a boss around the cutout. I guess I'm looking for some input here. Does anyone have any experience with this?

I would prefer to get a late model 915 from a 3.2L that already has the opening. Maybe someone on the board has a late model that you are willing to trade?

seems there was a recent thread on this. From that thread, I believe one other key thing the 915 needs (for the 3.6) is a cooler.

It's not a very big cut. I can't imagine it seriously compromising the strength of the housing. I've certainly never heard of one failing.

You only need a trans cooler if you're tracking the car. I've got a temp gauge on mine, and on the street it barely gets to 180. On the track, without a cooler, I've seen it go above 240.

Notching a 915 isn't a big deal. I have used my self notched magnesium case behind a 3.6 for the past 7 yrs. with no problems. Some one posted some pics of the mod, either here or on Rennlist. Might have been Cary Kutter sp?
