people's choice on mufflers....

Hello all.

I need to replace my muffler (74 911 2.7) and I am not sure what I want. I really dont want to spend a fortune but yet I would like a quality piece.

What do guys recommend? How does that Bursch system sound?

I dont want the car to be loud, just good sound.

Any advise on who has the best pricing?

Thanks a lot everyone!

Chris

Hi Chris,

I have a pair of SSI's feeding straight into a 2 in 1 out Stainless Steel Bursch muffler. Here's how it sounds:

I just replaced my stock unit with a Bursch. I was surprised on how much quieter and deeper and less raspy it sounds now.

That said, my old muffler had been repaired numerous times before, and had more outs than the one it was supposed to have. It did sound more angry, but nowhere as clean as the bursch.

My choice though, if money was no object would be a SS dansk.

Seems to me that the most durable and cost effective mufflers are the OE style sausage shaped mufflers. Some of the custom can-type mufflers don't fit as nicely (although they are a little lighter). I had a B&B can style that hangs crooked and the end cap has developed some small leaks. Sounds really hissy when you're driving near walls or buildings. Muffler was installed on a previous car in 1993, I believe. My original 87 sausage, albeit a little rustier on the exterior until I sanded and painted it, is much sturdier but quieter.

If you want to be cost effective, you'll probably have to forgo the polished stainless kind. Pelican sells all sorts of OE style mufflers:

Pelican Muffler Selection

These FVD ones are probably the same thing:

FVD Muffler Selection

Obviously i'm biased toward the OE style mufflers. Especially if it's just the muffler you're replacing and nothing else.

Well up until last week I ran a Bursh. When I first purchased it 5 years ago I loved it. it was exactly what they said "Deep & Throaty" after a couple of good years of driving it started to get louder and then it started to Rasp and resonate. So I welded a resonator tip on it and that seemd to help but still not the sound I truely enjoyed. So with my new rebuild I decided to modify a OEM Banana muffler. I just completed the modification last weekend. I changed the original outlet to 3-1/2" and added a second on the other side. I fabricated a mini muffler cut a hole on the other side installed the Mega tone and welded it in place.
I designed it so I can fine tune it with out removing the 3-1/2 tip that is also welded on.
The muffler and my Porsche look very nice with those two big dual chrome tips glistening on her back side.
I haven't fired my Baby up yet I plan on doing so in about two weeks. I'm not sure if this is what you had in mind but at least you know about the Bursh mufflers burning out.

Good Luck..

I have tried several mufflers, but not on a 2.7. I have used the Bursh mufflers on several previous cars (2.4 and 3.0 SC) (Older track version of the Bursh on the 2.4). I have used SSI on a 3.0 and I have a Danske on my 80 SC (3.0) and a Bursh on my 3.2 87. All of these were fitted with a cat test pipe, which helps with the back pressure.

My 18 year old son loves the Danske as it is LOUD and breaks up (pops) a lot when you take your foot of the gas. It does add power over the standard OEM. I personally prefer the Bursh. It's not as loud, sounds nice and deep, and doesn't have that raspy sound. Throttle response also seams better (could just be my imagination though).

My newly rebuilt 2.7 has a Bursch. In other words Bursch manufactured the unit, but it incorporates a Dynomax muffler between the tubes. Dynomax makes good performance mufflers for many applications. I am happy with it and I think it sounds just right as far as noise and the announcement that something fast is nearby without bringing babies to tears on the sidewalk. Not that I use it very much, but I have a Pioneer CD player with 6's in the doors and 6x9's in the back and at highway speeds, it can be heard without difficulty. My $0.02 worth.

I have a Fabspeed bolted to SSIs, on a 3.4-liter modified SC, and it's loud. Superb muffler, in terms of quality, but don't bother playing the radio. I'm about to DE the car at Lime Rock in April and have fabricated a pair of 90-degree-elbow outlets to point the noise from the big twin 3.5-inch outlets away from the noise monitors between the track and the town, which I've been told will be necessary. We'll see.

Sometimes I think I should get into the Porsche muffler business.
Then again, even though I can weld S.S., I can't do it as good as the old man at GHL.

Love my GHL! Perfect sound. Well made. Priced like other quality products.

I Have a GHL cat bypass & single in two out. It's loud but sounds great, The engine seems to rev easier. But I wish that I had gone with SSI's & Dansk two out. Fla has done away with smog Inspections for now but with my luck as soon as I backdated the exaust they would bring them back. I figured with the GHL system I could replace the converter easier than switching exchangers. Craig

Cool

I have heard the Monty more than once and do like it. The Monty owners all love them but I seldom read a post on the Monty. Is the Monty disliked by most guys???

Go for the Monty Muffler. They make a very large selection of types for the 911. Responsive especially with SSI's. Throaty but mellow with low overtones. Just sounds great. Very well constructed. Best one I have had over Bursch or Danske.
This has not been a paid advertisement.
He He.
Just my $ 2. worth of thought process.

Post Note . . .
Most guys probably settle for the Danske or the Bursch because they cost less. Bottom line. But they are good but are not Monty's.

I have a monty dual in / single out (with a large tip, I think 4") on my 2.7/SSI. It looks cool, sounds very deep & throaty, but is pretty loud from outside the car. Inside is nice.

But... I think I'm going to sell it, because it looks too modern for my '73. I'm thinking I need a classic two in / two out. Mine has been dented at some point & patched (small weld spot over the outlet), anybody have an idea what this muffler is worth, or if it could be converted to dual out?
