Gonna Buy New Struts/Shocks - Would Love to hear preferences; koni vs Bilstein
I really don't like asking this because I think that most people that have Koni' will recommend Koni' and people with Bilsteins will favor Bilsteins.
Is there anyone out there that has had both Koni's & Bilsteins and which did you prefer? I mostly drive street with fun & fast trips thru the mountains. I auto-x a few times a year but hatis mostly a social thing and won't determine the setup of my car. Thnks for any insight................Vern |

I was looking at rock autos site and wondered if the prices shown for 81SC could be true. Seemed too good to be true

I went with Bilstein Sport all around. The car came with Boges which were totally shot when I bought the car. The Bilsteins are really stiff which I do not mind but some passengers have mentioned how bone jarring the ride is. The boges were terribly soft in comparison but very worn out too. I to enjoy an occasional jaunt through the hils and dales with one or two DEs a year.

Bilstein HDs are my preference. I've driven hundreds of 911s with Konis, and thousands of 911s fitted with Bilsteins. The PO of my car had put Bilstein Sport Shocks in my '82 SC - I hated them, and even though they were less than two years old I replaced them with the Bilstein HDs. I've owned P-cars fitted with Konis, and I've owned P-cars fitted with Bilsteins. I'm a racer at heart, but never liked the jarring harshness of Konis, or the incredible stiffness of Bilstein Sports. For me, the only 911 that needs the Sport Shocks is one fitted with over-sized torsion and sway bars. That way they're a package. This is the car that I really liked Bilstein Sport Shocks in...

Koni's aren't so bad - I had Bilsteins on the 87 carrera - Koni adjustables on the 74.
I think it's much more important to have a well functioning / bind free suspension with appropriate, recent shock absorbers for the type of driving you do. The beauty of the bilsteins is their ability to get rebuilt or revalved for small money.

Get a hold of Clint at Rebel Racing and talk to him about custom valved Bilsteins.
I have no affiliation with RR, just a satisfied customer.

I put Koni yellows on my 951 and liked them, on full soft; but that was a bit heavier car with stiffer suspension.
When it came time to replace the shocks on my SC I put on HD Bilsteins (replacing factory bilsteins) and I'm well satisfied with both handling and ride. Jerry M '78 SC |
