Very nice work Thor,
We both started our engine drops around the same time. I see you removed the mounting post on the middle runner for the fan mount. I was going to do that but it was in the right spot to mount the vacuum switch going to the WUR on mine without re-doing my lines again. Where did you attach yours. I can see the lines dropping behind the #3 runner but can't make out where it is attached. You can see it in my picture from my car. (Ignore the stainless airbox) Quote:

thermo valve relocated
Dennis,
I shaved the mounting pads off intake runners 2 and 3 for the fan mounting bracket and removed the unused one on #4 in an effort to clean things up a bit. I moved the thermo valve behind #3 and used a spacer and a bolt to mount it to the throttle linkage pad. There are 2 tapped but unused holes in that pad that will accept an 8mm bolt. Mount it high enough to clear the throttle bellcrank. Your engine is looking good also! Thor http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1324262779.jpg |
Clean up continues...
Preparation for engine install continued on this warm and wet northwest day. Pressure washed the back end...up next tunnel fuel line replacement, clutch cable, and brake hoses and fluid flush....

you are smart to replace the rubber brake hoses
I am not real fond of your front wheel "chocks" tho have a friend there & have them hold a cell phone, ready to dial 911 just in case... |
Hey Brown,
May i suggest "choking" your front wheels like this ... I just used some scrap 4x4's and 2x4's i had laying around, and you don't have to raise the car as high in the rear and it keeps the front spoiler off the ground ! If you have a friend with an engine hoist, you can lift the car by the engine mounts then you just lower it onto the engine. It's way safer that trying to jack it up the conventional way with your jack stands extended all the way... I did the whole R/R by myself and it was a piece of cake,it was my first time as well ! Cheers ! Engine installed
Took advantage of the spring like weather we've been having in the northwest and installed the engine today. C/V joints and brakes to go through but getting closer.

Man, I need a pressure washer.
|
Nice job! I am going to have to try your mineral spirits trick! I literally used a dental pick on my 40+ year old 901 to get at the nooks and crannies and nearly wrecked my back.
|
Thanks Bryan... Look forward to meeting up when we get our cars on the road.

Excellent work. I am in the process of doing the same to my car but I am only halfway through my engine drop because I have been working so much lately and have been busy with school...
Interested in hearing on how the reseal went and if you were able to rid of all of your leaks. Did you replace any seals in the tranny? My trans is leaking for sure and motor as well from 160 places probably. |
Jonathon,
Still some work to be done before I start it up to see if my work was effective. As far as the tranny , I replaced the front cover gasket and shift shaft seal. Differential shaft seals, input shaft seal and o-ring. Stay tuned for results. Thor |
Beautiful work. Out of curiosity, how did you manage to get your fan to look like that? I love it. I'm dropping my engine to do some gearbox work and will be going through a similar set of projects.
|
The fan, shroud, and intakes were glass bead blasted then protected with a coat of rubbed on ACF-50.

And no I don't have a black-eye, I have a grease-eye.
|
Cheers Jonathon! Good luck with your project. I've gotten a lot of enjoyment out of getting to know my car. Thor
|
Ya it's definitely a blast! Funny thing... We were trying to seperate the trans from the motor and were having a lot of difficulty. Finally yanked it off... I didn't remove the clutch arm/helper spring so we were fighting the spring... doh.
I ordered a whole bunch of goodies... Did you replace any sensors/switches that thread into the case? There is two on the top I think, one on the return tube housing, and one on the actual case. The one on the case for me looks like it might be leaking, was going to just remove it, clean it, tape it and reinstall it. Just curious if you did anything with yours...? |

Do you have a copy of the 101 projects book from our host? Wayne addresses all the problem leak areas. I did replace the oil pressure light sender, the thermostat o-ring and the breather mount gasket. These are the common leak spots at the front of the engine and very difficult to access with the motor installed. A tip I read somewhere is to run a bead of JB Weld around the crimp area on the pressure sender where it meets the plastic piece. I would not spend time trying to fix a leaking sender. The sender, gasket and o-ring can be had for around $10. I did not replace the oil pressure or temp senders at the back as the are both easily accessible and showed no sign of leakage. Thor |
Yep I have a copy and was planning on doing as much of those 'oil leak fixes' as possible, but wanted to know if it would fly just trying to reseal the sender since I forgot to add it to my order ...
|
And how come you are up this late anyway? I am working midnights currently... what's your excuse? :P

Fair enough, I will order more parts... I need rotors/pads still anyways, and I forgot to order a pop-off valve and airbox cover straps! Listen to me, spending my money so easily...
When are you planning to fire it up? |

Drop project complete
All back together and complete! I've put almost 500 miles on the car in the last 2 weeks.
Running great, drips no oil, shifts like a dream(thanks Ed!). All in all it was a very rewarding experience. I learned a lot about my car. Next weekend I plan on changing the oil, dropping the valve covers to reset the valves and to check head stud nut torques. Thanks to Pelican and to all that supplied parts, tools, and advice. Next up, spring plate rebush and lower the ride height. Looks great Thor! You definitely earned all those pelican stickers!
|
Brian,
Bid some Seattle flying and you can take it for a spin! Thor |
