First time engine drop
Engine is coming out for a broken head stud, SSI's , reseal, de-smogging, and a growing list of "while its out" items. Followed Wayne's book and all was straight forward.

It was that clean BEFORE you took it out?
|
...good on you, man...i know you enjoyed that sierra nevada!!!
|
Today a little clean up before going after the studs. Mineral spirit rub down then blasted off with the pressure washer. Exhaust was removed without breaking any studs. Heated the nuts to red hot with an oxy/acetylene torch and they came right off.

Congrats. Keeps us posted. Just curious, what kind of jack is that?

Progress report
I've had some time to work on the car lately so here is a little update. Engine was stripped down to the studs and all lower Dilivars replaced with steel. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/622847-broken-head-stud-defeated.html Cylinders are back on and I'm waiting for the baffles to come back from powder coating. Cleanup of the engine bay and new sound pad installed. Bilsteins have been sent off for rebuild. I met up with Ed M , aka Ivangene and had him put in a set of his Derlin bushings in my shift coupler, Thanks Ed!
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/624546-christmas-came-early-d-derlin-shift-coupler-ala-ed-m.html Picked up a 2 out Monty to go with my SSi's. I'm not sure I want to go this route yet but it sure is a thing of beauty. The PO had cut the outlets off and had them rotated up for his early car so I'll have to cut them and rotate them to clear the SC bumper. I'm hoping I can get this thing back together before the rains set in! Cheers, Thor http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1316873955.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1316873265.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1316873352.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1316873650.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1316873392.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1316873481.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1316873526.jpghttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1316873818.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1316873863.jpghttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1316874141.jpg |
How did you get the shroud like that?
|
Shroud Krylon overhaul
Matt,
I degreased with mineral spirits. Wet sanded with 220 grit. Final rub down with acetone then applied a couple coats of Krylon gray primer. Color coat is Krylon Banner Red applied in several light coats until I had good coverage and then one good coat to blend it all in. HTH Thor http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1316889231.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1316889264.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1316889296.jpg |

Looks great. Will the paint hold up to the engine temps?

it does look awesome but I'd be concerned about the heat too...giving off fumes etc. I'd use engine primer and engine paint.

Not going to sweat it... If it doesn't hold up I'll redo it when I drop it for carburetors ;)

915 cleanup
Spent most of today with a toothbrush, mineral spirits, and the pressure washer.
I'm running out of things to clean up. Must be time to start putting things back together. all the fish in the Puget Sound will love that run off from the cleaning.

Like a proud Daddy !
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1317086541.jpg You do nice work Thor !! What direction carb wise are you going to go with ? I'd like to do that eventually (PMO ??) with the SC, but it's going to take a lot of money & time to get it track ready first ! I like your exhaust too! Friday, spent the day at my friend's putting the new oil cooler on the 2.2 '70E engine (small leak found on the old one after the engine rebuild.). Hopefully ready this week --> Mid-Ohio next week !!! Nuthin' like a clean engine ! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1317087986.jpg |
Way to go Thor! It looks great! Are you adding cams or was this just meant to be a repair and clean job? Either way, it looks great and you have been truly indoctrinated:)
|
Hey Brian ! What have you been up to ?? I see a PCA treasurer now.....
|
I've been the Treasurer now for 7 years brother, lookin' forward to hanging up that hat next year sometime if they'll let me:)
I've been well, just chasing the family around as the kids grow older and get more active in sports. Very little track time for me, unfortunately. I don't think I knew you had an SC as well, but it's been a long time... |
Nice collection of plastic on the shelf in the background!
Working on my 77, 911 has cut into my modelling time too.

Good eye James! I've found a new hobby for now. Thanks Rich and Brian. No carb$ and no cam$ for now. Just want to get it back together and learn to drive it. Thor |

Thor,
Nice work. Taking all that time to get it clean, really pays off while you're working on it......and when you are done...it's a thing of beauty. regards, al |
Progress report
Progress has been slow with life going on but with stormy weather outside I was able to spend the last couple days in the garage. Got the cams timed and valves set today. Picked up the rebuilt starter and alternator and the tins from the powder coater. No rush now that winter is setting in but things should progress rapidly now.

That's a nice piece of work --- of art! Congrats on the outcome. It's clear that you spent lots of time and hard work on it.
I see that you mount the engine directly to the engine stand. Is that the Harbor Freight stand? Or Ebay? BTW --- "Brown747" --- I would guess that you fly UPS 747 cargo planes? "That's a nice piece of work --- of art! Congrats on the outcome. It's clear that you spent lots of time and hard work on it. I see that you mount the engine directly to the engine stand. Is that the Harbor Freight stand? Or Ebay?" Harbor Freight stand and the top engine studs fit directly into the stand mounting plate. Because of the protruding lower studs it will not rotate beyond about 30 degrees either way from horizontal. As it is just supported only by the top 2 studs I would not want to turn it much beyond 30 deg. I will mount the exhaust then lower it to my ATV jack to finish up mounting the flywheel and clutch as there is not room with this stand setup. Next time I will spring for the correct mounting flange. I would also like the stability of a stand that has 2 "feet" as this single in the middle T design is getting less stable as the weight from accessories adds up. BTW --- "Brown747" --- I would guess that you fly UPS 747 cargo planes?" Yes, I fly the Whale for UPS. Thor |
Thor,
I have the adapter for the engine stand. You are welcome to borrow it and my stand, if you'd like, for the duration of your rebuild. regards, Al http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1322720466.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1322720484.jpg |
Thanks for your offer Al! I'll give you a shout next week sometime....Thor

Back together!
Just wrapping up my lower stud change and cleanup project. Deleted A/C, cruise control, smog pump and associated plumbing, backdated heat, installed later style cam chain idlers, powdercoated tins, added SSI's and Monty. Next up , replace clutch cable and tunnel fuel lines before re installing. On track for a spring return to the road. Thanks to all that offered help and advice during this project.
