Starter motor weight savings?

Gents,

Pelican has the lightweight starters at 8.1 pounds.

Without removing mine and weighing it, could somebody please tell me how much weight saving we are talking, and then I can decide whether it is worth the $250.

Thank you.

Found this one on ebay--

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/PORSCHE-911-MINI-STARTER-ALSO-PORSCHE-912-914-930_W0QQitemZ8062022299QQcategoryZ33576QQssPageNam eZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Is a mix of oem parts... uses Nippondenso motor-- and is lighter at 8.2 lbs.. but for 2hp has less torque than the Pelican aftermarket one... so is it worth the cheap price
?????

That's about right, my old one was a bit under 16 on the scale, but it had quite a bit of dirt and crud on it.

Figure 7-8lbs less.

I use that one and am happy with its performance. Once I paid (BIN), it arrived the next day - quick!

Look closely on the Ebay ad...no question a good deal...but understand that the "guts" are reman...not new ( as it says in fine print)..... be aware of this.

The Pelican or Gene Berg units ( for VW/Porsche) I beleive are new "guts"....and also a good deal but more expensive.

I would get the Pelican one. Its brand new and a huge weight savings too. Don't get a mixed up used one.

I bought it anyways because they do provide a one-year warranty which is the same for all starters. It was the bucks that drove me on this one! So far everyone who bought it have said nothing but positive things. We shall see...........

I bought one also. I don't even need a new starter but the reviews I've read were positive and the price was too good to pass up. I'll post my impressions after installation.

Mr David E. Clark, I salute you.

You don't even need a starter, but you bought one anyway.

You have got the Porsche bug bad.

I don't need one either but what's another $100 on a 2 year project that's WAY over budget. I bought one. There's another 8lbs off my 2900 lb car. I should be under 2800 lbs now even if I do put the A/C back on! Hell this is cheaper/lb than the used Carrera aluminum A/C bracket I bought.

I agree. The way I figure it, with the 8 pounds I'll lose on the starter I can have another cold one without worrying about switching to light beer!
