Gas Gauge

Hey folks,
Trying to get my '70 gas gauge working and I don't know where to start. How can I test the wiring/current levels to see if it is gauge, in-tank float, or wire? Are there any values to measure out there? Thankx.

Most of time it is the sending unit in the tank. I don't have any values for you, but if you pull the sending unit out of the tank you can make sure the float is moving smoothly on the guide wires. Also a quick check would be to put an ohm meter across the terminals and see if the resistance changes smoothly as you slide the float up and down. One wire is ground (brown), one is for the level gauge, and one is for the low gas indicator warning light, which would show as an open circuit when the float is up, and a closed circuit when the float is at the bottom.
Make sure you have a replacement gasket.

The other way is pull the tank sending unit and hook it up to its connector. rock the tube up and over and with the key on the guage on the dash should respond.

My Gauge had bad solders.

I would tap pn the gauge and it would correct itself.

I took mine off used a 9 volt battery to insure the guage is reading then I resolder the joints. All good now.

Could you not just place a DVM with a full tank and take reading at the sending unit to see what range of voltage you read at 4 points? Full, 3/4 1/2, 1/4. This way you don't have to crack open the gasket?

Thankx guys, It ended up some bonehead (me) connected the wrong wire on a lead to the guage. Seems to work like a charm when it is getting a signal.
