DZug SC to RSR 3 month Speed Build

In the words of Hannibal from the 'A Team', "Ya gotta love it when a plan comes together". Back in April, Pete and I, fresh back from our Essen adventure Road Trip to Essen, and... started looking around for a suitable candidate for the DZug Targa Florio/Nurburgring (dzugtours.com) driving experience car. We found this solid early SC for sale on the classified forum 1978 911 SC - Silver Coupe in Ohio


We then posed a challenge to ourselves... could we build it in time for the Savannah Porsche Parade/Turbopalooza event in July(starts this week), 3 months away??? We just looked at each other and laughed and knew right then, it was ON baby!

Pete flew to Ohio and drove the car back to NC. He was pleased to report that the rebuilt 3.2SS with 964 cams loved to rev and pulled like a train. Upon inspection, we were pleased to note that respray was mediocre and the interior in fair to poor condition (no headliner, ebay sparco seat, short shifter, welded sunroof, etc)... in other words, a great starting point for our project that didnt make you feel guilty about not restoring back to original.

Anyhow, in the spirit of GTRDN, we immediately gutted her, pulled the motor and tranny, unbolted the front fenders and loaded he on the trailer. We then pondered who we could get to do the bodywork. Neither Pete nor i welded good enough to attempt flare, nor did either one of us have time to do the bodywork and get her to the point of primer, nor did we want to deal with any of the local prima donna (not to mention expensive) bodyshops who always make it seem like they are doing u a favor and never do things timely. so we decided to take another approach. Two of Pete's friends that had just finished the bodywork program at local CC and were hungry for work, agreed to do the body and prepwork and deliver the car to us in paintable condition. In addition, they would do the rollbar and weld in the oil cooler.

The rollbar was welded by these guys just by looking at pix i sent them of original RSR ones... i think they did a pretty good job.

While the guys were doing bodywork, Pete and i were sourcing parts. As you all know, it's the details which make these cars so great, and things like seats and wheels were key.

Regarding wheels, we were going to originally run 16x9R and 16x8F, but fate had other plans. The 16x9/8 Euromeister repro are NLA. Fortunately, i had a set of 16x9's on my Carrera we could use, but what about the front. 16x8's are hens teeth, butttttt, i noticed that u can find 15x8's all day long on ebay. Soooo, thinking that the 15x8 offset would look killer and 15's would pay homage to the real RSR's, i got a set. Turned out to be a great decision as u will see..

What about seats? This potentially, is one of the most $$$ decsions for the RSR build guy.

Here are the original RSR seats that we wanted to replicate. i love their simplicity and look.


However, most of the options $$-wise just didnt make sense, so i started looking poking around the net and 'voila' found that Corbeau makes these...


They are known as the Corbeau GTA Lo Back seat. VERY nice price for a pair, and the headrest is removable if u need it to pass track day tech or whatever

Regarding belts, i really wanted a set of vintage REPA's, be every time they came up on ebay, the bidding went stratospheric. soooo, i went back to the web, and found a set of vintage-esque Sabelts. I settled on their 4 point harness.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, our personal bodyshop guys worked away, and by mid May, were were getting closer...


While the guys were bodyworking and i was sourcing, Pete was busy detailing the motor. We decided to plate the engine hardware with the Eastwood home zinc chromate kit... came out quite nice



Pete came up with the idea of doing a little something different for the fan shroud instead of the usual red.

By June, work was dragging on car due to the unanticipated delay of May 'senior week' in Myrtle beach during which our guys went MIA in search of Poontang. Fitting panels in late May

For the next several weeks, the guys sanded and primed, sanded and primed. Finally, after what seemed like forever (june 29 to be exact) Pete loaded the car up on a trailer along with door, fenders and other parts and brought her back to our shop.

At this point, Pete turned from mild mannered punk-ass-beyatch into a lean, mean painting machine. In what seemed like no time flat, he had the car taped up and ready to shoot.

Sorry guys, started this yesterday morning, then internet and pix loading got slow and had to go to beach with family. What fun iz a one day thread anyhow?

Sooo.... where were we? oh yeah, Pete turning into a painting machine...






All in the span of a couple of days.

Up until this point, we were faced with two dilemmas, first how to paint the front bumper in the iconic RSR red, and what red to use. We looked at several versions of the 73 Targa car to come up with a solution...

Orange-Red like the factory mystery RSR?


The rear bumper like this? Red like this?

Or Red like this?

Or like Kitchaks interpretation on his prototype evolution of the original 73 car?

As most of you know, and some will point out, we are not technically building a 73 RSR but a long nose 74 RS, so Pete and i figured we could break the rules a little. Do we ever follow the rules?

Sooo, Pete being the final aesthetic dictate on this, and with the wry sense of humor that is his, came up with..... wait for it.... FERRARI SCUDERIA RED Hey, the Porsche factory used to paint it's practice cars for the Targa Florio in Ferrari red so as not to piss off the locals, so why can't we???

And u know what, Combined with our interpretation of the bumper contrast, it turned out to be PERFECT.

July 10 -(wow, was that really 3 weeks ago?!) Well after tons of wet sanding, and then clear coating, here's how she looked

In prep for installing the RS carpet, we removed yet more interior mid 80's (stereo, alarm) wiring junk to add to our already growing pile...

At this point, Pete started putting red bull in his cornflakes and having double espresso's for lunch and dinner, and i was there each week after working nights at the local hospital ER pitching in as well, as we hunkered down for some GITERDUN...
