Frankenstein Engine Drop Help Needed!
So I am about to drop the engine and tranny in my car. It's an 83 SC engine and what I assume is the original 74 transmission (4 bolt CV joints). The actual car is a 74 as well. Obviously none of the engine drop threads, articles or instructions go over a frankenstein set-up like this. So let me tell you what I've done already, and maybe you guys can let me know what else I need to do with a mix/match set-up like this:
Disconnected battery Drained oil Removed rear sway bar Removed AC compressor Removed CV joints Removed throttle connection Clutch cable disconnected Reverse light wire removed (or what I believe to be the Rvrse light wire, I pulled the wire that was positioned where the book said it was suppose to be) Removed 13mm nut on starter that had 2 wires connected Removed heater hoses Hard oil line disconnected Oil breather hoses disconnected Shift rod cone pin removed Fuel line at top of fuel filter removed Fuel line that lead into a fitting at the driver's side rear disconnected There is no O2 sensor connected. My main concerns are the speedo cable and tach connection (if there is such thing, I just assume) and how to remove them. Also the fuel fittings at the driver's side rear of the engine, I don't quite know what to remove there and what's alright to stay. And on the starter, is there something beside that 13mm nut I need to remove? Obviously this is my first engine drop, and I'm getting everything from books or threads. And I'm doing it by myself. This is a recipe for disaster, I know. But I feel like I am almost there. I have an ATV jack and know I can get the car high enough for removal, I just need to know I am not going to tear a half-dozen still-connected wires when actually lowering it. Thanks!! |

Big starter wire from battery, and s hose from oil tank.
Just go slow and check all around as you are dropping it and you should be fine.

hotwatermusic, I believe from reading your above info is that you have disconnected the speed sensor (speedometer) instead of the back-up lights. That's OK. For the starter, you only need to disconnect the black cable from the battery. The other 3 wires could remain in place and won't interfere in the engine drop. Have you disconnected the accelerator pedal linkage by the transmission? How about the clutch release lever's circlip? S-hose oil line disconnected? 14-pin disconnected, CDI, etc. and other related wire connections? Transmission/engine ground straps? Then you are set to drop the engine. Take your time and be SAFE. On my 82SC, there are 3 fuel fittings of interest for a drop. you got 2, the filter and accumulator. the third is near them, two rubber lines with metal fittings connect to each other (one end has a 17mm or so nut that is loosened). There is also very close to that a rubber breather/vacuum line that needs to be disconnected (hose clamp). When you start to drop the engine, stop after a few inches and look around with a flashlight to make sure nothing is still connected. The hardest part of the drop is getting the shaft that attaches to the shift coupler to clear the hole. There is barely enough room to do it; you have to move engine back slightly then down to clear it. Helps to have someone watching it while you move engine.
