Smile Antenna Key - muffler bearing and blinker fluid

I’ve had my 83 911SC for a few years now and in an effort to convince the wife that all the time and money spent on my impractical hobby are truly worth it, I volunteered my ride for a trip to the beach here in Oregon. She enjoyed the removable targa top, and our 6 year old treated it like a 3 hour roller-coaster ride.

On our way there was a request to listen to the radio.
An interesting proposition I thought, I have never actually turned on the radio in the five years I’ve owned this car. So what the heck, I turned it on, but there was no reception due to the antenna not being extended. I then pulled over and went to pull out said antenna, only to find it counter sunk.

A few minutes later the pocket knife had pulled it up enough to get it into position, but this left me with a lingering question, how are you suppose to extend it?. .
Well, according to my handy owner’s manual (read while the wife went through yet another trinket shop), I’m to use the Antenna Key, which of course I don’t have, obviously. So when the wife gets back and asks “So did you figure it out?”. My answer of “Yeah, I need an antenna key” which was met with a certain level of skepticism normally reserved for muffler bearing and blinker fluid jokes.

So..Anybody know what an antenna key looks like for a 1983 911SC?
If you have one could you please post a picture, so I don’t end up buying something really silly off the internets.

Thanks for all your help :-)

Did the manual depict the Mystery Key? Does yours have a motorized antenna or manual?

There is an Antenna Key. I have one that came with a non-power Hirshmann antenna. Look on eBay perhaps. It is not very complicated. I think a "jewelers screwdriver" or you Swiss Army Knife will work about the same.

In answer to the identification questions.

It is an original, manually extended antenna. The tip of the antenna is a slotted affair and it is not motorized. The manual does not depict the antenna key.

again Thank You all very much .. A

I've got a couple of them on my key chain. Next time you drive thru Salem I can show them to you if you want. (I'm on vacation for next 2 weeks though)
Joe Bob's picture is exactly what they look like. Funny part is I just bought my car and had no idea what they were for. I thought my antennae was broken off at the mast. I read the owner's manual and then I understood, tried it and they work.
There's still the mystery small black plastic item, about the same size as the antennae keys on my key ring, that has 2 small holes the same distance apart as those keys to accept or twist something?

I think this is what you need:

NOS Hirschmann Radio Antenna Key Porsche 911 912 356 | eBay

That is the same "antenna key" That came with my stock manual antenna on my 79 Targa.

I had one like that, but it was in shaped like a letter P. Sold the car, gave the key with it.

Great stuff :-)

This it turning out to be far more enlightening then I thought. LOL

Thank you all for the input.

I understand the positive intent of your post Caaraa (that being to be proactive) and know that Ebay might be a proper solution, provided one actually knows what they are looking for, which i unfortunately did not until asking here. In this case the picture of the available key for sale doesn't match the picture placed by Joe Bob (who has the identical year as my ride). or the shape description offered by Geronimo '74.

I've found that with many things Porsche related the answer is often simple or a somewhat entertaining rabbit hole of trivia minutia. Ultimately I'd rather ask and look silly, (and then get the correct part), then arbitrarily order things, literally not knowing anything about it or it's function. Sure things can be returned, but someone has to go to the effort to find it and post it. I'd like to think I respect their time enough to do it right the first time.

When i get home tonight, I will see if I can get a good picture of the socket to post, If nothing else it will give the next person to explore this thread, looking for answers to the Antenna Key and Blinker Fluid dilemma, a proper place to start.

...A

I have a different type, that is in a holder like tube that has a gromet trim piece where you push it into the holder and a nut on the back side and it is mounted into the side wall of the glove box in the 67 Targa, more of a pin / tweezers. I never uesd it as the orig antenna is gone and some POS spring mounted thing is in place untill a later restoration, will post a picture after I replace a broken LCD in the camera this weekend.

Regards

Here it is at rest. It isn't fully pushed in because Its harder to get back out without the hemostats.
But you get the idea...
