Is ok to change tranny fluid with just the rear jacked?
Or do I need to have it as level as possible? Would like to drain and replace myself at home.
Thx, John |

You need to have the car level in order to get the correct fill level indicated. The fill level will be off if you only jack up the rear end.

you shouldn't get down there with just the floor jack anyway. I assume you meant a floor jack and some jack stands.

Thats correct, have the car supported by jack stands at all four corners.

Yes
I drained my 1973, with the drive side rear up only, easy to get to plugs. Side and top plugs.
I then filled with Sweepco, and left a low profile pan under car with the side plug off for at least a hour with the drive side rear tire back on the ground without jack stand. Then jacked back up and put plug in, clean extra Sweepco off transmission, lazy mans why with out a lift, or all four up. |

Thanks for the concern!....yes I meant on Jack stands.
I suspected that may not get me to the correct fill level if the rear is up. Need to get a couple more stands or get one of those drill operated car lifts! Appreciate the feedback guys. As a P car noob I'm very impressed with the great peeps here on the forum. John |

If you're going to the trouble to change out the fluid then why not do it right? Get another pair of stands. Keep in mind that the front requires smaller stands to be level with the rear. Also, if you haven't done a search (the search button is your friend), always make sure you remove the fill plug first. It stinks if you drain the trans but can't get the fill plug open.

+1, crack the fill plug. make sure the hex socket is square and use a cheater arm if stubborn.

Jack up one side. Remove the plug. Install the filler hose. Lower the car. Fill with lube until it starts to run out the hole. Jack up car again. Remove hose and install plug. Done.

I wasn't quite so scientific. I jacked mine up to drain the fluid. When i filled it I left it on the ground on all fours and had my son slide under it to hold the fill hose in place while i used a hand pump from Auto Zone to pump the fluid in.
