Engine Drop Mishape

All,

I decided to drop my engine to fix some oil leaks and look for vacuum problems in the CIS.

We followed the Pelican tech article " How to Drop an Engine" The shift coupler was discounted.

When the time to lower the engine came, the engine came down faster and farther than was expected. We caught it and raised the engine and transmission quickly. We didn't hear any unusual noises or other indications that some thing went wrong.

What should I be concerned about, what should I look for or am I good to go?

Thanks,
Guy

Guy,

If you have disconnected the 14-pin connector, electrical connections to (CDI, VR, etc.), speedometer wires, starter's big black cable, fuel lines (delivery & return), oil lines, ground cable, CV bolts, heater hoses, carbon canister hose, etc. you should be all set to go. Pull out the set screw for the transmission linkage (inside tunnel)!!!! Don't forget to disengage the accelerator pedal connection at the transmission and clutch cable.

Tony

Check the seal on the transmission shift shaft while you are there.
It's really cheap and easy to fix while the motor is down.
If you dropped if fast with it still stuck in the tunnel there is a chance you damaged it.
First hand knowledge

The shift shaft would be the only thing I would be concerned with as long as everything else was disconnected. I have seen one bent pretty badly by an engine drop gone wrong. You are probably O.K. though. Best of luck

Looks like I bent the two transmission mount seats (washers) under the transmission mounts.

The shift shaft was discounted in the tunnel and the seal appears to be OK.

Next time I'll keep the car as low as possible, discount the engine, then raise the car.

Thanks.

That's how I do it. I have the car at normal ride height or lower, then drop the engine slightly to the ground ( or pallet that it sits on), and raise the back of the car using an engine hoist. I attach the engine hoist to the rear engine mounts on the car with a specially made (5 minute job) lifting bar.

Euro911,

Thanks and I'll let you know. It's going to be another week or so before it goes back together.
