Engine drop question

Dropping the tranny and engine together. Does the cross over rod under the tranny come down to allow the tranny to lower?

Once all the fuel/oil/electrical and the shift linkage is unhooked, take out the 2 bolts on the transaxle crossmember, and the 2 on the motor mounts, and the whole thing comes out as one unit. You just have to move it aft as you lower it so the nose of the tranny doesn't hang up.

The crossmember where the tranaxle bolts to the car stays attached to the tranny. Not real clear, but you can see it in this pic.

My son and I dropped the engine/transmission in my '76 earlier this evening; I made a list of thing to disconnect but there's always more than you remember once you get in there:

Disconnect battery hot (positive or red lead) and pull red fuel pump relay.
Under cover in hump behind front seats disconnect shift coupler and connector to speedometer if electronic.
On top of engine disconnect two fuel lines, two breather hoses and one or two hoses to charcoal cannister.
Also on top of engine disconnect 14 pin connector, connector to CDI unit and a couple of other small connectors on driver's side of engine.
Remove air pump if equipped.
If equipped with A/C cover right fender with thick towel/cloth and disconnect A/C compressor but leave lines on and rest compressor out of the way on towel on fender.
Drain oil from oil tank and engine sump.
Underneath disconnect two oil lines to oil tank, heavy lead to starter, transmission ground strap to body, throttle linkage from tunnel to bell crank on transmission, mechanical speedometer drive if so equipped, two hot air hoses from heater boxes to body, and inboard CV joints on half shafts.

Look for anything else you missed as you carefully lower and pull back the engine from the raised car.

For safety, always support the car on jack stands or a hoist with a positive mechanical latch or lock when removing the engine/tranmission.

I seem to remember having tools thrown at me when I was an apprentice because I didn't remove the BLACK (-) lead from the battery first...

Yeah, its better to do it that way. However, in my battery set-up, ground is hard to reach. Therefore, I use a stubby combination wrench to loosen the hot lead and then put the lead end inside a couple of plastic bags to keep it isolated from the chassis. Jim
