915 stuck in 2nd gear

I appreciate your all attention for another repeat but I couldn't find a similiar case.

Drove the car into the garage in 2nd gear a week or so ago. Lifted her up and jackstands all around with the front higher. Pulled the front suspension, replacing the lower ball joints and installing turbo tie rods. The car a 72T has 210,000 miles.

When I tried to back out of the garage it wanted to go forward while in neutral and wouldn't move in any other gear.

Now she's back up on rear jack stands. I'll pull the little bottom plate, draining the fluid and then I need to know what I'm looking at. Sounds like just a screw driver to push 2nd gear back and then fill with Swepco, Right???

If youre hanging in gear its usually indictative of a worn swivel that is connected to the shifter in the back seat.
Before you fill it with swepco make sure you can get it out of gear again.

Check the coupler between the rear seats before draining the fluid.

I don't why they would be connected but it sounds to me like the coupler rotated on the shift rod shaft and now the gear selection is wrong.

Get violent with the shifter and yank it back in forth, she may pop into neutral and you will be a go...

Rear of the car is up on jacks. Checked the linkage behind the seat and all is tight and moves in the correct direction. Transmission fluid level ok. Started to pull filler plug and clean looking fluid leaked.

If I start the car in neutral and ease out the clutch the rear wheels start turning forward. Step on the brake and the engine quits. Again any gear slected and easing out the clutch causes the engine to quit.

Now my ignorance shows up. With the engine off and the transmission in neutral or any slected gear, I can turn the rear wheels forward and back! Whats with that? If I'm locked in gear and the clutch is engaged I should be directly locked to the engine, NO?

You can turn the wheels because of the differential. Turn it one wy and the other turns the opposite way. Try holding one and try turning the other. If it turns then its in neutral. if it doesn't turn the its in gear.

Is this a 4 or 5-speed in your 72T? Original to your car? Has the transmission been opened in the past few years? Any additional info on the trans???

If you're getting good linkage movement into the trans, and can't find neutral, then you have an internal transmission problem. You say the car will move foward in neutral, but stall in any gear selected. Is there 1 gear in which it won't stall, or 1 gear you cannot select? Some possibilities: the guide fork has come loose, a synchro has blown and jammed a gear, something has broken and seized a gear, or you have an interlock issue.

Pull the shift fork cover off and make sure all the bolts are tight.

Pulled the bottom plate and just looked around. Wiggled what I could and then put the bottom plate back on. Without any Swepco I started the car and with the clutch in just ran back and forth thru all the gears.

I guess that's all it took. It felt better all of a sudden and when I let out the clutch all 5 gears and neutral worked!!!!!!

Top off with Swepco tomorrow and I'm back on the road. Thanks everyone.
