Porsche Crest More stupid questions. (I need your help)

My car is a 1983 911 SC Targa. First, the manual heater controls work fine. No problems.

The slide controls on the dash are stuck with very little movement from side to side. It feels as if there could be wires behind the dash interfering with the mechanism.

Question: What do these slides control? In the rear of the car underneath forward of the engine are two air boxes with cables attached. Are these driven by the dash controls or the ones on the floor? Thanks in advance for your help

The heater controll of between the seats on the floor control the air boxes you reference. The slide controls in the dash are somewhat of a mystery to master. These control the direction of air (defrost, vents, and blower motor.) The blower motor is located in the hood compartment. When you are looking ot the rear of the dash, there is a cardboard cover, covering the wiring in the dash. In that area are the controls for the fresh air blower and vents. You may be able to access that area and lube up the cables or see what the problem is. I know Roland posted a response to taking this control panel off earlier this week. That may be a help.

Cool

dash heater/vent control cables are a simple system that can be repaired/adjusted without getting greasy. A full explanation is in Pano Feb '96 or Up-Fixin Vol. 11

You're not alone with problems in this area. Here's a current thread dealing with a similar thing that may help ...

I had a bent-up cable so I removed the cables and repaired it. As said above, the dash levers control the air box located under the cowl (front of the windshield).. It's not easy, but you might need to remove the cable system, repair it and then put it back in. A brand new calbe unit is pretty spendy!
