Test fitting wind screen.

In this light, with mold release not yet cleaned off the rubber, and no chrome trim my car looks to me like it is wearing ski goggles.

(P.S. that's an original green 914-6 that just arrived to take my spot on the hoist for a restoration).

I found a good video documentary series that explains the evolution of these cars.

At 3:15 in this video begins the RS/RSR segment.

Here is something that is worth doing to an early car dash.

The factory used a combination of studs (at the passenger compartment edge) and plastic clips (at the windshield edge).

The plastic clips snap and dash tops can curl up at the corners. Before we installed the glass the dash would stay snug at the front so I found some plated studs at a local fastener store and used them to replace the stupid plastic clips.

In the pic you can see the factory stud in the stock location and and my new stud where the plastic clip used to be. It goes through the same hole in the dash metal as the old plastic clips. I would hate to do all this work installing the windshield and have the dash come loose later.

Fixed for good.

Finally finalizing oil lines:

The last owner planned on running the oil lines through the trunk, but I've decided not to do that. One of the challenges that I created for myself was deciding to keep the battery boxes. Since the hard lines are Elephant racing units, I went back to them to supply the front flex lines using their existing off the shelf lines made for this purpose.

Once this is finalized we will weld up the existing holes in the trunk as they will no longer be needed.

The biggest challenge adding the front cooler behind the 73 RSR front bumper is the lack of space. It is pretty tight. I needed shorter threaded adapters for the cooler and, a line that would fit between the bumper and the cooler. When I called Elephant racing they assured me that while tight, the angles would fit perfectly, and they did.

Once this gets sorted, the bumper will get its final paint job. It got a first splash of paint so we could the before the car went in. Once I am sure that we won't have to cut into it, the final coat will be applied to the bumper. Looks like the angled line will mean that I will not have to modify the fiberglass. Phew. One less job to do.

In summary, to get the clearance I had to move my cooler over as far as I could to the driver's side (1/2") and use the shorter cooler threaded adapters (you can see them on the cooler in the first picture), and the lines with angled ends also supplied by Elephant Racing.

Getting closer. More pics to come once they are up and over the battery box.

Heh Wayne,

Do you have any pic's of how you have fitted the Front and Rear RSR bumpers? Just looking for ideas of how to mount.

Cheers

Brent,
I took a look at your project. Wow, I thought mine was ambitious. Great progress on yours!

FRONT
As for your bumper question, the front bumper is attached to the stock 73 bumper mounting location on the chassis using "L" brackets that bolt to the front bumper. You can see the bumper recessed nuts a few pictures above where I show the oil line and the back side of the bumper.

PROBLEM: the passenger side bracket is exactly in the spot that I want the oil lines to occupy. I haven't solved that yet.

REAR
In earlier pictures you can see a hole drilled in the bottom of the rear signal light area. The previous owner did that to hang the rear bumper off of a bolt in that location. DON"T DO THAT. There is not enough metal there to support it, and the bolt would be in the way of the tail light housing anyway.

For now we mounted it by passing a bolt through the vertical part of that opening and attaching to the bumper's bumperettes, and also to the lower edge of the wheel openings.

In my box of parts I found two odd looking fibreglass pieces and in a GT racing bumper picture I think I can just barely see them being used to mount the rear bumper to the car's "frame rails" for lack of a better term.

I'll shoot some pictures once we finalize everything.

Brent, here is an earlier picture showing the battery box mounts that grab a tab on the end of the front bumper. Just ahead of that are the mounting holes in front of the battery box that the "L" bracket goes to.

I am doing a front cooler on my bone stock 71 with RS Bumper, and had to route the hoses around the battery box and down into the bumper opening.............

Not completed yet, trying to incorporate a lower protective bar as used with the later A/C front condensor. I just don't want to drill too many holes if not needed.

I had the same problem. I made a custom bracket out of 3/16" aluminum. I cut a U shaped hole in the bracket which allows the hose to go through it. Here is the best picture I have of it.
Red arrow is the top mounting bolt.
Yellow arrow points to the U shaped hole.
The bottom mounting bolt is not visible.

without me reading all 400+ posts in this thread, would you mind indulging me, please? What happened to the hood with the scoop from the original pictures in this thread? Do you still have it? If so, can I buy it from you?
FWIW, I am just starting a retro 73 RSR project car and need a hood like that as I am installing a 996 GT3 engine/trans. I will need the big radiators up front and thus the hood with scoop.
Thanks

Clarke

The hood is available. I wanted more traditional, but I thought the green car earlier in this thread was extremely well done.

I've sent you an email. I'll be able to ship it in a few weeks. I'll give you a price shipping included once I figure it out.

Gordon & Len, thanks for the pictures.

I'll use these for reference as I finalize the oil line routing, and try to snap some pics along the way for others to see. Thanks for the ideas.

Sorry for a bit late question

I think this is very good idea to make no-glare dash!!! Nice work...

Did you use sandpaper on leather or just got it like that?
Thank you,
-Y.

1) The dash top material is alcantara (suede like synthetic material) that exactly matches my new Recaro seats (shown earlier)

2) The second job we did was the lower dash trim strip by the radio. It was brown leather, and so dried out that Mike just applied black dye and it soaked it up. Now it looks like new.

Here is the dash top before installation.

(see next page for a picture of the dyed area by the radio - I had thought the area by the radio should be basketweave but by 73 they were using this material even in the RSR race cars. Since mine started out as 73 I already had the correct material there. Meanwhile on the dash cap I took a bit of artistic license).
