964 crank pully question

Hey all:

So, in rebuilding this 964 I separated the two lower crank pulleys. My friend Chris says I'm going to hell.............

first, it looks to me like each pulley is balanced individually, so A. they should go back together in any combination, but he says no....

Also he says that the 964 crank can't use the Patrick style smaller pulley (I do have that on my 993 crank motor) . Is this true? His claim is the stock (big heavy) double pulley is mandatory to balance the 964 crank

also, as I want to run A/C, so I need a double lower pulley, does anyone make a Patrick style (smaller, lighter) double lower pulley, so I can use the RS style upper pulley drive hub (one belt)

Andy

the 964 pulley does incorporate a harmonic balancer the the 993s don't use.

Is it critical? no. The penalty is mostly extra vibration. That said i'd retain it on mine.

Did you ever take the two pulleys apart or were they balanced as one?

I've never taken one apart, I have no idea what damage may have been done

Andy, I am in the same situation that you were in - did you get this solved?

I also found that the pulley assembly is not keyed, so there is no easy way again to make sure you have the Z1 at TDC (I had assumed before taking it all apart that the assembly could only go back in one way!)

So, if your friend Chris thinks you will go to hell for having taken it all apart, then I suppose I will see you there!!!

I do believe that you can purchase a replacement harmonic balance from Porsche, so you must be able to take it all apart and put it back together again!?!

Hi

I've found that my pulley is misaligned so I’m guessing that someone has taken it apart in the past. Did anyone ever find a definite answer to the question of how sensitive the pulley is to being taken apart?

Thanks

Sam

After much searching I found a post suggesting that the pulley should be zero balanced (I’m assuming that means dynamically balanced on its own). I can not find out anything about how moving the parts in relation to each other would effect the resonance of the pulley.

I’m going to see if I can find someone to check the balance of the pulley once I’ve taken it to bits. but as I’m over in the UK there seems to be less places offering that sort of service :-(

The question remains why would anyone have take my pulley to bit in the past? Did you separate yours by accident?

Yea, I was being careless and did not mark the relationship of the pulleys nor pay attention to what I was doing at the time.......

As my great friend Chris Bennett says (who if he is reading this, I owe a phone call to), "Experience is nothing more than accumulated remorse"

If you figure anything out, please do tell

A
