71 911T tranny serial number
As I applying for Certificate of Authenticity Program for my 71 911T, I am required to furnish VIN, engine s/n and transmission s/n. The 5-speed trannny serial no. clearly stamped is 7710172. According to the 911 Specification booklet for 1969, 70 and 71's, the second "digit" of serial no. code indicates the type of transmission, e.g., 4-speed, 5-speed or sportomatic. The second digit "7" of my serial no. does not correspond to any known type. As I am 99.99% certain this was the original tranny installed at Porsche factory, the second digit should be a "1" indicating a 5-speed. Does anyone know the significance of the descriptor "7"?

That is correct for a '71 911/01 5-speed transmission.
EDIT There are two series of numbers for ’71 type 911/01 (’70 also). They ran out of numbers with 7110001 through 7119999 and continued with numbers 7710001 dedicated through 7719000. In fact the highest numbers I’ve seen seem to be about 7713800. That is about 13,800 911/01 transmissions with 711xxxx and 771xxxx. Does 7710172 have the numbers on a retangular boss under the differential? If so,you have the latest casting - reinforced. Best, Grady

Thanks Grady,
The s/n is stamped on rectangular boss on the under side of the case. Now I can apply for the COA. Scott |
