notchy 2nd in a G50?

I drove a prospective '87 coupe today that was a bit rough around the edges, but has a fully rebuilt engine (spun rod) and 118K. Asking is $17K. One thing I noticed during the drive was that it was pretty notchy going into 2nd (either from 1st or 3rd). The other gears were a bit notchy too, but 2nd was the worst. The car didn't really have a chance to warm up (the boy was in tow for the test drive), and it hadn't been driven yet that day. I've recently driven one or two 915 trannies that felt smoother, but they were warm. My old G50 was pretty much like buttah except first thing in the morning (today's drive was around noon). The clutch was light pressure and felt fine. Does this sound like just cold gear oil or worn syncros? Or perhaps some other issue related to the rebuild? A drive when it is warm should give another data point, but I was wondering if there is anything you can do in a PPI that is a good diagnostic for drivetrain issues (other than the test drive).

My 88 (lo-mi) is always notchy in the morning and takes awhile to warm up. When the oil dial is past the first white line the tranny is usually warm too. I understand synthetic is a slippery move.

I would be more concerned with the spun bearing repair. Did they replace the crank? Mechanic turned crank in my case. A big mistake. He also missed some metal particles, which in turn ruined the pistons & cylinders in short time. If this engine was repaired to sell, not keep, run away.......

IMO, 17k with rough edges & engine/trans concerns will be 26k all too soon.

I didn't hear that the engine was rough but that the car appeared rough around the edges. Cosmetics ?
Perhaps we need some clarification. You should be able to get a pristine 87 for the low 20's albiet w/ some miles.

mostly cosmetics. The main thing was paint flaking from the left rear fender...looks like a sketchy bondo repair of a crease. Other than that it is mostly stuff that a good detail would fix except for sagging headliner on the sunroof and wear on the seats. Front end of the car looked straight under the carpets and was tight. The story on the car is a guy who owns a shop bought it a year ago on the cheap with the fried engine. He rebuilt it (new crank...he showed me the old one, although I suppose it could have come from somewhere else), has driven it for awhile, and now is selling it as he has a few cars. Not your "ideal" background on a car, but it could be worse.

It also has the 018 option (sports steering wheel with elevated hub). The car felt damn comfortable with that setup. The wheel had plenty of clearance from the dash...and issue I've had with some 911s (the lack of clearance that is).

But pwd, don't some people look for *years* for their car? My statute of limitations shouldn't have run out yet...but perhaps it is inversely proportional to the number of posts during the search process

My second gear is a little notchy for the first couple shifts when cold. A double clutch upshift solves the problem. After that, everything is pretty smooth. 65K mi.

Mine has 120 K. Same here on the notchy 2nd gear when cold. I must match the revs just right for the first few shifts. Guess that's what they mean by "synchros". Back to the Swepco 201 next weekend after five months with Mobil 1 gear lube.

Cheers

My 2nd is also notchy, but only when cold. Usually only on the 1-2 shift.
