Intermittent indicator function

My turn signals work some of the time. On some trips, they work just fine, others only part of the time. But more recently, they have been working less & less. I will activate the arm, and then in a few seconds (sometimes 3 or 4, sometimes 20+, sometimes never) the indicators will work. Is it time for a new switch (it's original from '74) or the relay getting tired?

Put a DVM on the fuse panel to see if you are getting a signal when the switch is activated, if not replace the relay. If relay does not correct it then the switch may be faulty or corrosion build up and simple clean may take care of it.

When you turn the hazards on, is it normal? this will eliminate the light assembly issues. My driver rear turn signal was intermittent, I found the PCB type part of the socket was fractured and the hot lead was shorting out. JB welded and it is good as new In fact I checked all the sockets and found my passenger side brake light socket PCB was fractured too

I'm going to try and replace the relay, they aren't that expensive. Can I get one @ NAPA or are they a specialty part?

Edit: Doing some more reading this morning and it appears I have another symptom. Both of the indicator lights on the tach flash when using the stalk, does this also indicate a failing relay? This is my first 911, I just assumed it was normal...

I have this issue... its the relay. If I hold it right they work. If not holding it, they work some of the time. Relays are special order from a porsche parts place like... Pelican On my SC, the relay is located in the front trunk area directly in front of the gauges. Its a black box. Enjoy!

I'm going to try and pull the relay tomorrow, if I can get it to it easily via the fuel gauge....will report back once I've swapped in another.

Joe Bob, regular old round relays or signal (square box I think) relays? From my limited experience I believe that are different.

We had some good weather here on the east coast the last few days so I've been driving the car and I have a few more symptoms to share. Put almost 250 miles on the car and the signals had been working 'till I was on my way home from the shore last night. I was almost home and the signals stopped working, so I pulled into a parking lot to confirm that even though I wasn't seeing the indicators on the tach, the outside lights were, in fact, also not working. They weren't. However, when I tried the hazards, the outside lights were blinking, but still no indicator on the dash.

So to review, no activity when using the turn signal stalk, but hazards work outside, but no indication inside. And for fwiw, the last 3 turns on the way home, the stalk worked just fine.

I believe this means the relay is ok because the hazards work, but my switch is bad? Correct?

Ok guys I need some help.

I just swapped out the turn signal switch for a new one from our host. All the lights work (high beam, low, & ftp), when I tested the turn signal, it worked a couple of time each way and then stopped. Hazards still work. I swapped in a used relay (unknown if it's a good relay) and I get the same result. Can I now assume that I have a bad (or two) relay?
