Key Broken inside ignition lock
My key broke off inside the ignition lock. I tried getting the broken piece out with small screw drivers and tweezers but no luck. I've taken the ignition and steering lock out and am now starting and turning off the car with a screw driver. Is there a way to take the tumbler apart and get the key out? If not, what are my options? I would rather not spend the $670 on a new lock-ignition set if I don't have to.

try using two sharp picks, like big sewing needles. one top, one bottom and try to lever it out enough to grab.

Been there done that... if you can't get the key out, just bring the thing to a good locksmith and you should be going again for $40 tops.

Keys don't break off all at once.....how long was there a crack?
![]() C'mon give it up..... If you have AAA they will actually cover the extraction and key replacment. They WILL put a letter in your permanent file.....

Spare key - pick up a blank from our host and go to a good locksmith not a home improvement store. Mine worked great.

Same thing happened to me today!
My one and only key has been getting progressively worse (worn and cracked). Last week I ordered a replacement blank key from our host, but it has yet to arrive. I have been limiting my use of the car, but today took her out with a fellow Porsche 911 enthusiast. I mentioned to my friend that my key is operating on borrowed and time. Then sure enough, I go to turn the key and it snaps off in the ignition!
Lucky for me, I happened to be stranded out front of the top Porsche mechanic in the country who has worked in the past for RUF. He helped me pull the ignition switch and setup temporary operations with just a phillips head screwdriver. When I got home I was able to work the broken key out by gently tapping the ignition switch onto a block of wood. Thereafter a set of small needle nose pliers pulled the shard completely free. Now I guess it's time to call the Porsche dealer and order a new key... |
