Parking Light Help

When I pulled my front end I added Euro bumper strips on the far right and left. I noticed that when I have the lights on the car after the mod the parking lights are no longer working. (Turn signals work fine.) Any ideas? Maybe I just have the wrong bulbs. Anyone know what type of bulbs I need? FYI - I don't know if they were working prior to the conversion and this is a ROW car.

1st... Am curious about this mod. When you remove the outside lamp case to place the filler strip, what's done with the wiring to the outside lamp?

Hey, Karl. I just cut the wires and capped them off.

Another question 1st... "parking light" can mean different things to different people. My def of parking light is when key is out of ig, lights are off, and blinker is turned on toward outside side of parked car. Are we on the same page with that? (Just checked my parking light and both the inner and outer lamps are lit for the side the blinker is switched to---so your inner lamp should be lit... But... your headlights are on and so the reason for questioning "parking light.")

The lights that are turned on with the directional stalk (key off) and the light switch pulled to the first position are the same parking lights....with the key off you're just turning on one side.

On non-US cars the parking lights might include a lamp in the H-4 headlight housing...sometimes called "city lights"

I think the picture the OP posted was the city lights on but nothing lit in the bumper lamp housings.

The directional blinkers are a separate filament in a dual filament bulb....they have nothing to do with the parking lights, except sharing the same bulb.

I think there is sometimes confusion because the parking lights (key off) and the directional lights are both controlled by the directional stalk, but they are different circuits.

I didn't really know what to call them. I guess I should have said running lights.

Here are pictures of the bulb and housing if that helps.

that is a single filament bulb and socket. You removed your running light.
If you want running lights you need to modify yours to a dual filament socket and run a 1157 bulb that was in the corner light you removed.

Or maybe the euro housing comes with a 1157 socket?

Or will the corner light housing fit in the front light position?

Either way your not done with this project.

Okay, that's just strange. Here's a shot of the corner light housing that I removed.
I'm going to wire it back in and see if the lights both work when I have the lights on.

Here's a clear shot showing that it SHOULD. Not that it will obviously. (FYI - this isn't a picture of my car.)

What you have is a euro model where the front orange light is for blinker only. Do what 1979 930 said or find US spec front lights that have both position and blinker function.
FYI
Blinker bulb 900 631 127 90 single filament 21W
Blinker and position/parking light 900 631 128 90 dual filament 21W/5W

If that is actually YOUR housing, then the light did not work before you did the bumper modifications. Someone somewhere changed the housing on you, and you've never noticed that the parking lights there didn't turn on.

Yup. That's the picture of my actual housing. So it looks like I'm going to have to wire in a US housing. That's going to be the tricky part. I'll probably have to drop the bumper again. The good news is that I hardly ever drive the car at night.

Here is a picture of when I had my front bumper off. I actually replaced the turn signal light that is hanging down.

Notice the two spade connectors coming off the back of the light housing, just to the right where the harness comes out of the housing. Those are the two prongs that the outer lights you removed would daisy chain into.

The harness from this light goes up into the headlight bucket. So you'll have to remove the headlight to wire a replacement back in.

Lights.

^^^^^
Here is a copy of my factory manual for the M/Y '86.

Yours should be very close.

M553 is U.S.A Canada wiring.

Good luck,

Gerry

Here are a couple more pics.

You can see that the socket has two separate points of contact at the bottom, one for low wattage filament (parking light) and one for high wattage filament (signal light).

I also took a pic of the back spade connectors that the lights you removed would daisy chain into, as well as the fact that the harness has 3 connectors that run into the bucket (I would assume yours probably has 2, a power and ground). HA - looking at Jerry's post above, I was right.

Insane amounts of info. THANK YOU!! I'm going to try and pick up used lamps and just rewire my current housing w/o having to drop the valance and bumper. We'll see!
